the MW3 hate thread got me thinking bout games that i was disappointed with. so i figured i'd make a thread asking what people's most disappointing games of all time were. i can think of a few off the top of my head.

1. Mario Kart 64

after the masterpiece that was the SNES version, this game was such a pile of shit. the fastest cc class in that game felt like 50cc class in the SNES version. they removed the whole jumping/sliding mechanic and replaced it with this stupid ass sliding mechanic that took about 30 seconds to master. the game had absolutely no sense of speed and it took about 2 hours to master the entire game, whereas the skill and precision needed in the SNES version was nowhere to be found. it seems this series has continued to take the same route by dummying down so much in it and making it extremely casual friendly.

2. Super Mario Sunshine

after what is agruably the best game of time, Mario 64, to be so excited for the sequel, and get something as shitty as Mario Sunshine ... wow, what a downer. it barely had anything in it that made Mario 64 so awesome, and went a totally whacky direction with having the water jet attached to mario. this game just had no charm and had some really frustrating controls and parts in general.

3. Gears of War 2

after anticipation from the first game, the bug ridden experience that was Gears 2 was just awful. the single player and multiplayer were just so filled of bugs that i stopped playing this game very quickly. the only saving grace to this game was bringing on horde mode, which now seems to be a standard in multiplayer shooters.

4. MGS4

well i can't say i was too disappointed with this, because i didn't expect much after part 2 (never played part 3, but hear it's great), but even then it was just terribly disappointing. after all the hype built up on that game, it was just a slow boring monotonous game that suffered from clunky and awkward controls. i never got around to finishing it, stopped at act 4. just didn't find it fun and it was more of a chore to play than anything, and the pace of the game was just awful w/all the long cutscenes in between.

I definitely don't agree with #1. MK64 was awesome.

My biggest disappointment is probably the first Force Unleashed. I really had high hopes for that game.

Edit: I also returned my new, yet opened copy of CoD BO for full value after hating it, too.

Why would you hate one of the best party games of all time?

Oh and beev, the most disappointing thing to me about The Force Unleashed (both games, actually) is that they were made at all. After the first one was a pile of dog shit I was hoping they'd maybe make a Republic Commando 2 or Battlefront 3, but nope, they had to make a shitty sequel to a shitty game and then acted all surprised when it was a flop.

They've got one of the most valuable, if not THE most valuable, IPs in all of gaming and media in general, and TFU2 was the best they could come up with? Fuck.

Fable fucking 3. Not only is it crap, but the savegame file system is utters shit. I had nearly 100% completion and all I needed was 1 silver key and it got corrupted.

FF13-Utter POS. I literally played through the whole game plressing one button and used no strategy in combat at all.

MGS4-The game so sucked and the video clips sooooo long I didnt even know what it was about.

Transformers (first movie one on xbox360) WTF?!? Wow, so bad I cant even describe it.

ET (Atari 400/800 computer version) History has already said it all. 1,000,000 carts buried in new mexico. But, it did talk at the end of the game, which literally lasted 5 mins, if you sucked that is.

7th Guest - PC. Yeah, cd multimedia hype in the 90s. I had to buy 3 different video cards to even find 1 that worked. After many 100s of dollars I found one (STB) that worked only to be bored to tears at how bad it was.

Myst, yes myst, I dont care how many 1000000000s of copies they sold, it is one boring POS.

Man, I can list for days.

Gears of war 1-One button to do it all. Really? I guess my other 10 dont mean shit. I still havent finished it because the save system sucks!

And speaking of save systems, that brings me to....

Resident Evil (3do and a few other later releases) WTF is up with the stupid typwriter save system? Other than the fact that typewriters were obsolete even in the time of the first game, dudes, pause, save game, continue, die, load last quick save.

i thought i explained in decent depth why i didn't like MK64...

Right, because it isn't a hardcore game for mature gamers such as yourself.

Do you also subscribe to the "no items, fox only, final destination" school of Super Smash Bros?

Eh, I suppose I shouldn't talk, everyone's entitled to their own opinion... game mechanics change from one installment to the next, and in many cases they're made easier or more accessible. But Nintendo knows what they're doing. A party game is no fun if one person who has learned the tricks wins every time.

Haha..agreed 100%. I wish they didn't release ff13 on the xbox, so I wouldn't have been tempted at all.

wow you sure are getting butt hurt with me not agreeing with you. i like my games to feel challenging and rewarding for being good at them. mario kart 64 had virtually 0 learning curve and had no sense of speed. if a multiplayer game isn't challenging to be good at, then i don't find it fun.

and how is Super Mario Kart a "hardcore game for mature audiences" only?

I've got a terrible memory, but I do remember that Homefront was pretty disappointing this year. All the videos they showed made it sound and look awesome, and then I got it on day one(after a long drought of having no decent new games come out, so I was really looking forward to this one) and it was brutal. Pretty much turned me off from pre-ordering non-AAA games forever now.

MK64 was excellent. The computers were easy but the multiplayer with friends is where it was at. Also I liked R.E. and the save system made sense to me. It did suck to have to find one but after a bit of playing it, you knew where to find them.

I'll add:

Perfect Dark for XBOX 360. While on N64 it was an upgrade to the legendary 007, it was a nice add-in to have the bots and extra challenges. I don't know what they were thinking on the xbox release. Note- They released a port for xbox 360 for the N64 version which actually isn't half bad. They increased the resolution and it has a pretty similar feel to the original, but the controller is where it was at for me on the N64.

FFXIV. I was a huge fan of FFXI but FFXIV was just completely different and ruined what was fun about FFXI.

My prediction is that Diablo III will not live up to Diablo II. Just watching the videos I can sense the loss of immersion. Seems they just focused a lot on graphics rather than feel. But it isn't released yet so there is still hope.

Halo 3. Worst iteration of Halo yet. Halo the original was excellent and they nailed it on the head with Halo 2. Then ruined it with Halo 3, then half a come back with Halo Reach. They should skip re-releasing Halo 1 and go to what everyone was playing - Halo 2.

Dragon Age 2:
Probably my biggest disappointment of all time. I loved DA1, but DA2 was just pure crap. I can't bring myself to finish it. I quit after act 3. The game has countless flaws and too few virtues. This, plus the KotOR MMO and ME2 (to a much lesser degree), has really shaken my faith and trust in Bioware (what used to be my all-time favorite dev).

Oblivion:
Oh man, I was so excited for this game. A big fan of Daggerfall, and then a HUUUGE fan of Morrowind, I bought a new computer JUST FOR Oblivion, and I was sorely disappointed. The extreme level scaling ruined every aspect of the game; it was completely unplayable. It wasn't until much later when a ton of mods game out that I was finally able to play a halfway decent game, but it still wasn't great.

With that said, I'm pretty excited for Skyrim. Not nearly as excited as I was for Oblivion, but still excited. I think Bethesda has learned some...

The World Ends With You:
After hearing so many people praise it, I got this game with high expectations. Honestly, TWEWY is just complete garbage. Every single aspect is just trash (IMO). The gameplay is horrific. The story is embarassingly juvenile. It is the worst game I've played on my DS, and also one of the worst I've ever played.

Sins of a Solar Empire:
This game got huge praise in the RTS scene. I bought it, played it for one day, and haven't touched it since.

Twilight Princess:
Boring, uninspired snooze-fest. Still a decent game, but my least favorite Zelda by far.

Fable 2:
I actually liked Fable 1, but Fable 2 just felt directionless, and like the choices were too small-scale and meaningless.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head

EDIT:

Final Fantasy 12:
First FF I couldn't bring myself to finish. The game was so tedious and boring! The unexciting story and one-dimensional characters didn't help much. I believe I got 40 or 60 hours in, realized I didn't care or know about what was happening at all, and just stopped playing.

DNF hands down.

As for Gears 2 being on the list..hmmmm? I enjoyed the SP of both Gears 1 and 2. I liked 2 better and had no issues with bugs. Of course I didn't play until earlier this year. :)

Most hyped game and highest rated game that sucked ass-

Fallout. Even more boring than Morrowind

Half Life 2

What the Fuck? How is this linear corridor shooter, with gimmicky physics, a Bland, Shallow, Generic story(Aliens Invade Earth! again...), and Horrible gameplay at the top of almost every pc gamers' list? It's Shit! You paid 50$ for the game in 2004 and now you're paying 20$ every few years for more DLC? Excuse me episodic content. It's like whatever valve does no matter how shitty is always excused by the goddamn fanbase. But as soon as another developer does it it's scorned! And don't get me started on the countless retconning. Retcons are why I don't read American Comics anymore. One Issue the main character dies. The next it never happened!

portal series

Seriously This game is shit. Another gimmick over extended to the point of absurdity. And yet the hipsters shit themselves all over when portal is brought up in a conversation. Oh look I made a cake Joke I must be an internet nerd! No story, No gameplay, Just gimmicks! Stop kissing valves fat ass they're not your friends! They're no better than EA/Activision. Zero day DLC, Zero Gameplay, Zero fucking reason to innovate. Oh look it's source it must be great!

I'm sick of the valve fanboys. They act just like mac users. Spouting the same nonsensical shit as apple fanboys do. Fuck the source engine! Who gives a fuck about what engine a game is on. Source is a piece of shit compared to Unreal. Source can't scale well for large maps. Source was designed with Intel Integrated Graphics in mind. Yes you can play hl2 on a 2004 dell with Intel gma 900. Doesn't mean you should be shitting yourselves about how great source is. Source needs to die.

GTA 4

It didn't have 1/10 the fun of the previous GTA games. Oh look I can make realistic people with brown and bloom! Gameplay? What's Gameplay? Where are the shit awesome vehicles from SA and VC? Where's the awesome guns? Where is the fucking Open sandbox gameplay that I loved from the GTA series?

Bad Company 2

Another fucking console port. BC2 is an over inflated arena game ported to the PC with no concern for the KBM.

Halo

Fucking shit killed PC gaming.

For me SSBB would be up there. The "story" mode was boring as hell and waaaaaayyy too long. I didn't really like any of the new levels much. They spent way too much time putting in pointless crap and padding out the stupid single player instead of adding worthwhile content.

Shenmue was the same way although I really didn't know much about it. Its a game that was disappointing when you finished playing through it, as it really starts to show some promise and then its over. And when you think about all the pointless junk they spent time putting in there you just wonder why.

Gran Turismo 4 and 5 were high on my list. They're not bad, and really 3 probably was the first sign of issues, when they decided to rework the game engine and then we end up with a lot less cars and losing other features (customization seemed not as good it seemed like).

MK64 was excellent. The computers were easy but the multiplayer with friends is where it was at. Also I liked R.E. and the save system made sense to me. It did suck to have to find one but after a bit of playing it, you knew where to find them.

Yeah, in fact that's pretty much why Mario Kart 64 is good. 4 player multiplayer. I liked the SNES one a lot too, but it desperately needed 4 players for multiplayer. I would say they've definitely just made it worse and worse over time. Could barely play through Double Dash and played the Wii one at a friends and hated it.

I actually liked Perfect Dark Zero. It certainly could have been a lot better, and I got pretty much no play out of the multiplayer, I had fun with the campaign in co-op. I didn't really like the original game's story and co-op was just meh on it, but got a ton of play out of multiplayer, although I liked it less than Goldeneye. I wasn't really hyped about PDZ though, so I wasn't really disappointed with it.

I had the least fun with Halo 3 too, the campaign was blah and plodded on. Halo 2 was more disappointing to me though, as they clearly were far too ambitious for what the Xbox could actually achieve and had to scale it wayyy back. I was hyped for the campaign and the story made me go WTF is going on (gravemind...) and other weird stuff (hate they changed Legendary to where one person dies you restart the checkpoint). I wasn't a big fan of the graphics overhaul either, and bump mapping looks awful today (and can't be improved as much as if they'd had focused on geometry and textures). Multiplayer was improved a lot, but I still hated that you couldn't disable vehicle explosions as we could no longer really do races and stunts and stuff as well.

I'm reserved on Diablo III. I haven't especially liked anything they've done from the start. I might play through it just to do it, but I don't know if I'll buy it day one or not, and I'm not expecting a lot of replay like D2 gave me. Right now, I'm expecting basically Torchlight but with a more in depth story.

I liked Zelda: TP and most Zelda games in general. Zelda Ocarina of Time was obviously the bomb diggity of the universe.

Warcraft III.

Back in the day I installed it off a friend's copy, played a couple of custom games, immediately uninstalled and went back to playing Starcraft. I hated everything about it - muddy control feel and unclear terrain, mechanics, even setting and graphics. So bland compared to well-done 2D sprites. :( It's only with SC2 that they achieved sufficient detail and organic feel in the control, terrain and models to make 3D feel fine.

A few years ago I thought to give it another shot, bought III+FT off budget shelf and started playing the single player on Hard. Got bored 3/4 of the way through III and never even touched FT.

I play mostly shooters, so I'll just chime in with the obligatory DNF. Playing it now. Just slogging through it. It's serviceable at best. 6 or 7 out of 10. I'll also agree to Homefront to an extent. But I also think you guys have short memories.

Can I get a little Far Cry 2? Up until a few yrs ago, the original Far Cry was was one of the better shooters ever created. When we were promised a desert environment as expansive as the jungle, that allowed even more free roaming, yet still kept an engrossing, coherent story. Um yeah.....that never happened. I think I literally played 2 hrs (like 4%) and then dumped it.
