I'm 2/3rds to my weight loss goal and my former 38" waist is now 34" and my clothes are just hanging off me. Literally, my pants would fall off if it weren't for my belt.

I wear a suit everyday to work so its a hefty investment to make if I one; continue to lose more weight or two; gain it all back.

When did you buy new clothes?

Not a weight loser, but:

If you're going for a 32" waist, then I'd say buy now. A decent tailor should be able to take in the waist of 34" dress pants down to 32" with little issue and make the equivalent adjustments for a dress jacket. Just make sure whatever jacket you buy fits your shoulders well and you're probably fine.

Edit: For that matter a tailor could likely take in what you already have, but it would be more awkward.

My wife has been buying a whole new wardrobe each time she dropped 2 sizes (probably not but it seems like it). I bought new clothes when I went from 34" to 32".

whenever there was a good sale, I'd buy a pair of my current size and the next size or two down.

edit: I dropped from 52" pants to 30", though I finally stabilized around 34" (plus or minus a size depending on the brand) after my doctor yelled at me to gain weight.

I haven't lost a ton of weight - literally or figuratively - but I'm waiting until I hit my goal. Was 215 lbs Thanksgiving, switched to a vegan diet (permanently for many different reasons, not just for weight loss), now at 193 lbs. My goal is 175. I'm starting to add more regular exercise into the equation and hope to be down to my goal by the end of summer.

Looking forward to treating myself to new and better fitting clothes. My pants are starting to droop but belt is holding them up for now. :D If my pants just drop on their own in public I may have to but clothes sooner...

I bought new clothes in the middle, I don't think I'm normal though. When I got down to 205 I was wearing 34's, when I hit my goal of 175 I was still wearing the same size. At 240 I was wearing 38's but could squeeze into 36's if I had to. I'm not sure how it works for others, but I have to assume most who go from 240 to 175 drop more than 2 sizes?

Probably didn't help you at all OP, my apologies.

Just keep using the belt.

Wait for your weight to stabilize.

Or if you need just a couple nicer items at your new size, but not a whole new wardrobe . . .

Maybe you'll want to hold on just a second with the clothes, you never know if you'll gain all the weight back

Awwe....here's a cookie. I know you can't really it, but just go ahead and stare at it or something.

Maybe you'll want to hold on just a second with the clothes, you never know if you'll gain all the wait back

Oh look, a cynic on AT. How special you are!

Actually buying new clothes would be an incentive to not gain the weight back, and serve as a visible and palpable indicator of any weight gain.

I was 205 at Christmas and wearing 36in pants, which I had just bought. Decided to lose weight and I'm now down to 174 and switching between my 36in pants and my old 34s. The 36in pants are bunching up and don't looks so good anymore.

I was aiming for 165-170 so I may buy some new 34in dress pants when my weight stabilizes.

I buy them whenever my current clothes start looking a bit ridiculous because of the large waist. Just because your belt can hold them up doesn't mean it doesn't look awkward with them being all scrunched up because you're trying to fit all that material in there. I usually find a 4" size difference to be too much.

It seems like I'm pretty close to dropping down one more within the next few weeks. Sigh... I hate having to buy more clothes. :(

Either if its that uncomfortable or just looks awful, or if you can without it being an issue (as in you can easily afford some new clothes). You might buy a small amount just for as you transition though.

I've been losing weight but I lucked out as I still had a bunch of old clothes from when I was in better shape and have been able to start wearing some of them again. Some of them though I doubt I'll ever be able to wear again and don't know how I wore them before.

When do you normally buy clothes? Going down 4" on the waist is a lot to be cinching on a belt when you need to look professional at work.

Taking in a pair of slacks is a lot cheaper than a new pair of suit pants. Taking apart a jacket, however, will cost a lot more than the pants, but should still be less than a brand new suit.

I've never done this before, but just talked to a coworker that's been losing weight the last half year. He typically buys clothes every 6 months at the semi-annual sale at his favorite higher end men's retailer. He's current strategy is to buy clothes that fit, and altering at the 3 month mark (business casual at our workplace, no need for a sports coat or suit). He didn't do the alter in the previous 6 month cycle, and his pants were falling off, too.
