Big typhoon vs scythe ninja

I have a Asrock 939 dual sata2 and an Antec slk300b case and running a opteron 165 which I'm overclocking. I am leaning towards the ninja. But there are a couple of potential problems that may be pushing me more towards the big typhoon...

The major issues for me are:
1) is my case long enough? with the ninja, The fan for the ninja will only have about 47mm between it and the back of my optical drives. Is this enough separation to get good airflow? I am especially interested in hearing from people who have a ninja installed in their case and how much distance there is between the heatsink fan and the back of the optical drives.has anyone fitted ninja and found they couldn't get good airflow because there wasn't enough space?

2) RAM cooling? I am going to overclock my RAM (volatage <= 2.9v, nothing too hard-core). Does the RAM need much cooling? It looks like the ninja might impede
airflow around the RAM. The typhoon seems like it might be better in this respect. Any comments?

Now, I'm not really asking which heatsink you think is better, I'm looking specifically for answers to the questions I have asked.

Thanks in advance! :)

The Scythe is hands down better than the typhoon. No contest.

As for dimensions. With a 4cm gap you should still be fine, however, it may be hard to connect all the IDE and molex connectors.

Ill say this one time now, you have PLENTY of airflow. No your Optical drives dont need airflow, no your ram wont need airflow. No the Ninja wont impede airflow (Remember where the fan is mounted on the ninja?) 2.9V is barely above the stock 2.5~2.6V. I doubt you would really even need HS's.

When an OP shows no profile and has not enabled PMing that's two strikes=no cred.

If a fan has clearance on the suction side equal to the thickness of the fan, all will be OK.
Fan intake will not suffer. No! I don't have links to back this up but have read it several times while doing MY PC homework.

In this case, ~2C is equivalent to ~10% better cooling, which is not nothing.

IMO the whole purpose of having a forum is to talk as a group. Personally, I always turn off PM when I can because there is nothing I have to say, or want to hear, that can't be said in open discussion.

what is "an OP" ?

2°C is nothing since that difference can be there because of mounting issues, amount of thermal paste, fluctuations in room/case temperature, inaccuracy of the CPU temp diode, and the list goes on.

2°C error margin is realistic so the difference between the two coolers when actively cooled, comes to nothing.

Personally i dont trust the review sight. Not very well known at all.

SilentPCReview, Anandtech, X-Bit, Guru3d

SilentPCReview is hands down the best sight for reviewing HS/Fs, and PSUs.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I ended up getting the scythe ninja. Unfortunately though, temperature doesn't really seem to be any better than with the stock opteron 165 heatsink. Piece of crap(!)

I'm still experimenting, but there does not seem to be much of a difference. There is actually a review (unfortunately I don't remember the link, can somebody else post it?) where the stock cooler for dual core opterons is pretty much just as good as the ninja.

Hopefully this isn't true, or else I just wasted $60 :\ :/

I have PERSONALLY used both of these heatsinks, in addition to a blue orb II (zalman on steroids) and I will reccomend the thermaltake big typhoon over the ninja.

I totally agree with GY!!

I also would like to point out that from case to case there are different variables that affect all around CPU temperatures.
From the number of harddrives you have to the number of fans you have even to the temp outside the case as well as the temp inside the case.....

ALL top flight heatsinks...which in my opinion would be...not in any particular order...

XP90 and XP120 as well as the SI 120 as well as the Ninja and the Zalman 9500 and the Big Typhoon... I am sure I am leaving something out but you would be hard pressed to find anything else as good as any of the above.
Yet with that said......they all under various circumstances are within 1c -- 3 c of each other.
Under any given set of variables any of the above could be a better heatsink than any of the others...have fun!!
