Just put together a new build:

Gigabyte P965-DS3 Bios F4
Corsair XMS 5400C4 2gb
Big Typhoon w/ AS3
320gb 7200.10 (showing as 127gb in windows xp - do I need to install SP1/2?)
OCZ 420 Powerstream (from old system)
PNY 6600 256mb

in EasyTune software under Fans

CPU is 550-600. I thought the Big Typhoon fan is about 1300-1500 rpm? How do I increase the rotation speed?

Temperatures at idle:

System: 36*C
CPU: 21-23*C (seems too low to be realistic?)

Ya think ;)?

Sounds like another borked temp sensor ftw :)
Try CoreTemp or Intel's TAT if you aren't already using them.

Ok I'll try those.

Do you guys know why my 320gb drive is shown as 127 after windows install?

when I right click my computer (manage) - disk management - it shows 170gb of unallocated space. Why didn't windows recognize that to begin with upon installation?

Because 127GB is the maximum partition size, under Windows XP, unless you have SP1 or higher. And to have all ~300GB as one partition, you'd have to slipstream SP1 or SP2 into your Windows install.

Thanks. I installed SP2 after having the primary partition of 127mb. I allocated the rest 170 or so as an extended partition.

CoreTemp @ idle.

Core 1: 30-31*C
Core 2: 30-31*C

File System bench:
an other note, as per Sisoftware Sandra 2007, file system benchmark inceased from 38MB/sec with 80gb 8mb WD IDE to 64MB/sec with 320gb 7200.10 for a 70% improvement!

Winrar 3.61 benchmark:

P4 2.6ghz HT @ 3.2ghz 1:1 ratio = 423Kb/sec
E6400 2.13ghz stock = 985Kb/sec (more than 2x faster)

But Xbitlabs reported 1192Kb/sec (20% faster)

don't know why such a large discrepancy...

Most likely because of your RAM. WinRAR is very dependent on that. What speed is your memory running at, and what timings? Relaxed timings could easily account for the difference (less than 200Kb/s).

If you disable smart fan or whatever it's called in the DS3 bios, your fan will go full throttle and be hella loud.

I had it running at 667mhz 5-5-5-15 timings spd 1.8V. The corsair rates the ram at 667 4-4-4 at 1.9V but I am going to overclock and am not going to bother with sticking to 667 speed anyway.

The specs for Big Typhoon say that at full speed it runs at 16db 1300rpm +/-10%. Why would it be loud? I just want it to spin at its full speed to cool down the motherboard and the northbridge better before I attempt overclocking.

You will find that the benchmark is much better at 4-4-4-12 timings than 5-5-5-15. Much more so (statistically) than a lot of other areas where the difference really doesn't amount to much.

Ok thanks.

What would be the maximum safe DDR2 voltage you'd recommend for Corsair XMS 5400C4s? (I was thinking 2.2V from stock rated 1.9V?)

I wouldn't go past 2.1 myself, but that is just personal preference. Some run as high as 2.4V though I certainly wouldn't reccommend it.

Thanks guys, I got the cpu fan to spin at its full speed.

I cant seem to be able to find ram timings. I pressed Ctrl F1 at primary bios screen but still cant seem to be able to find it.
