Big Typhoon or XP-120 for Opteron OC'ing

I've already got a good 120mm Panaflo, so I was having a hard time deciding between whether I wanted an XP-120 or Big Typhoon for overclocking my upcoming processor. My primary concern is the weight of the Big Typhoon, which is the only thing preventing me from pulling the trigger. It weighs almost 900g, while the XP-120 should be about half of that. I know the Typhoon should be a little bit better in cooling, and I was even thinking of equipping my Panaflo to it, instead of using that weak one it comes with, but then the unit would be even heavier.

Has anyone had any problems as far as weight goes with the Typhoon? Do you think if I added a full size 120mm fan to it (not the slim 120mm) that I would be fine? I know I've been recommending the Typhoon before, but like I said...I already have a 120mm fan, and I'm worried about the added weight of my huge fan.

If it's going on a DFI nF4 you may have a problem with it fitting right out of the box. Apparently the mounting hardware is off a bit, but it can be made to work with a bit of modding. At least that is what I read over at dfi-street. Unless of course, Thermaltake addressed the problem.

Thats what I did-TT and high speed 120MM fan-146 Opteron at 3Ghz with 1.58-1.6 volts with load temps at 51-53 degrees C. Weight issues. Bah. I even hang my keys on the thing when I get home- no problem!

I say the 120. Its great. The big typhoon is better, but you won;t need it, since you don't have a P-D ! I have XP90's on my 3 X2's and they are great, so the 120 should be better.

Well usually that would be correct but these Optys run HOT- I am seriously thinking about going to watercooling for this chip in order to lower temps and maybe hit higher clocks with less voltage needed.

Are you going to tell me a 4400+ will run cooler than a 175 Opteron OC'ed to the same speed ? I don't think so. My 4400+ on an XP90, low speed fan runs 51c @1.475vcore and 2550.

Yep- thats what I THINK- but...I only have the single core Opty(and read every thread I could find on them) - but if the dual core Opterons run as hot- I'm assuming they would- they should run 5-7 degrees C hotter than the X2's!

I have an XP-120 and it works wonders. I don't have experience with the other cooler you mentioned, but I would be somewhat considerate of its extreme weight. That is over a pound!!

I don't think ANY amd cpu right now get's as hot (or inefficient in terms of wattage/performance) than the 820D.

I have the Typhoon and it runs great, but installing was a huge pain.

No matter what you do, you can't attach the bolts to the DFI blackplate. They are too short.

I took an imense risk, applied all my strength into pushing the H bracket down and still I was not able to tighten the remaining bolt - it does not reach the thread.

How I did it? I bended the H bracket a bit and used DFI's original bolts, which are a bit longer.

I did manage to mount using this "mod". I almost destroyed my mobo, you can guess the screwdriver got loose one time while applying the force. I was luck not to scratch the mainboard circuits.

Although the Typhoon is a good cooler, I do not recommend for DFI owners. I would get a XP90C, much easier to install and performance difference is minimal.

My problem with the Typhoon is that, while I recognize it as practically the best HSF you can get, arguably, I move my computer around a lot. I went to a LAN two weeks ago and my 3 month old Samsung CRT died on me during the small road trip. So now I'm paranoid. I'm just worried about a nearly 1 pound HSF being attached to my mobo, even with a backplate as support.

*Edit*
I'm on a DFI NF4 Ultra-D and have an Opty 144 on the way, for those who don't know. Sorry for not laying down my cards in my OP :)

Sounds like there are installation problems with the Typhoon and the DFI. Hmm...maybe I should just get the XP-120 and strap my bad boy Panaflo on there after all.

Thanks guys!

In any and all test or reviews I have read the Scythe Ninja w/fan was always 100 times out of 100 the heatsink with the lowest temps as well as not having to remove the motherboard to install the Ninja w/fan......

Good Luck!!

Hmmm...it's still a tad on the heavy side at 665g, but that's much more comfortable than the Typhoon's weight. Gah, just when I thought I had decided! :p

Does the Ninja fit properly on a DFI NF4 Ultra-D?

I got today a Thermalright SI-120.

I think it is a good alternative to the Typhoon and it is a lighter one also.

I got a X2 3800 to install and I didn't want to fit the Typhoon again (for the reasons I mentioned before).

When I install it, I can give you some feedback. Meanwhile, try to look for some reviews.

I'm getting a scythe ninja myself for Opteron O/Cing. Seems it's quieter than the big typhoon and cooler if you buy a good 120mm fan to go with it.

If you don't mind a bit of noise though, go with the big typhoon.

No, the SI-120 is a Typhoon to be type. The fins are not connected directly to the cooler body like the XP-120. You have 5 heatpipes going from the CPU plate to the cooler fins.
The assembly is supported by additional wires on the opposite side. It is a solid mount but not heavy. It mounts with clips to a special bracket - no need to change the back one.

And it is much lower than the Typhoon. Checkout here:

I've just mounted a BigTyphoon on a DFI LANPARTY UT RDX200 mobo; and it's great. I have a 4200+ X2; It used to be loud and all but the bigtyphoon does wonders. When I installed it (my first time installing a fan) I had a bit of trouble attaching it as the thing is freaking HUGE. but afterwards my temperature dropped by 10C! half the time it's cool enough to where my fan doesnt even run. at 2.2ghz my CPU is at 24C idle from an original 33~35C

The big typhoon is actually silent with the stock fan.
