Big Typhoon or SI-120?

I'm at a toss up between these two coolers. I do plan to try some overclocking and have no idea which would suit me better. I also don't want something super loud, but i expect some noise to cool the processor. I like the fact hte big typhoon comes with a fan, but i would just purchase one if i decide to go with the Sl-120. Any advice is appreciated. Also, will i notice a big difference between these and the stock opteron heatsinks with the heatpipes when overclocking? -Rob

So are you saying I may be ok with using the stock amd heatpipe fan for overclocking and not have to spend the money on a 3rd party one?

I just got the BT and I'm really surprised at how quiet it is--way quieter than the fan on my 7800GT (of course that's not saying too much!)

Was it hard to install the big typhoon. That is one of my concerns as well? Also how do you know how tight to make the screws?

Yes, most likely. But what is the stock fan size? 80x15?

I'm no expert, but everything I've read about the AMD heat pipe HS has been very good.

It rates up there with the XP-90 according to some and will cool well even when the CPU is
pushed. Again, according to what I've read.

The stock fan has a number on it that is important for warrenty. Do not discard the stock fan!

I think the stock fan is 80mm. The AMD 754 CPU has a 70x15mm fan on an all aluminum HS.

Before getting a replacement HS, this is what I would do.

Clean off the thick thermal pad and reinstall with a good TIM of choice.
Buy a $4 80 to 92mm plastic fan addapter. Install a 50+cfm 92mm fan.
Total cost about $15.

I'm not kidding. When that AMD HS was first released it blew several reviewers away.

Do a search and see what you come up with before replacing it. If I had one, it would go on my sister's Athlon 3200 instead of the Zalman 7000 that's on it now.

A $50 replacement HS will cool a little better, but not by much.

Yes! But don't expect a mirical without more air flow. A 92mm fan at 40cfm is not loud.
At 50+cfm it will be noisy. A 92x38 at 50cfm is not that bad in a closed case(side panel on).

AS5 is difficult to apply properly and in tests it does not come up as best. This topic has been
kicked to near death. I have a large syringe of AS5 and that will be the only reason I'll use it.
I also have some ThermalRight grease that came with the XP-90C.

For easy of use go with. Zalman, AS Ceramique, CoolerMaster Premium, ThermalRight OEM,
Shin Etsu thermal grease. Do not use Radio Shack paste 😀

Huh what, how can AS5 be more difficult to use than those other ones? And what tests do u see as AS5 not coming out as the best?
