So, I bought a used Big Typhoon... looked in the box, and I had absolutely no idea how to mount the big thing

I did some searching around and discovered that it was supposed to have come with foam and mylar pads, in addition to the two H pieces. Well... sure enough, I only had the two H pieces and the mylar, no foam at all.

I was wondering, though, is it okay to mount the BT without the foam padding, or should I be safe and add some sort of rubber or foam from an old mousepad or something? Does it really matter what I use? Could I even use a piece from the sort of "gripper mat" that you put in drawers and such to keep stuff from slipping?

Haha, the infamous TT backplate,,, I love that thing. I got my hands on a few of them and back all my boards. Stock they come with a 1/8" double sided tape foam gasket that you can't remove. I use 2 layers of rubber friction tape stuck to the I bracket to match the thickness of the foam tape and a little talcum powder on that so it won't stick to my board. Also I'll use small side nippers to cut the protruding wires shorter to be absolutely certain the bracket won't ground out the board.
