Big trouble with 3dsmax render

Not that I've used 3ds max, I would guess that no lights = use default non directional light source so you can see everything. Soon as you add lights you are basically telling it that you are going to do it yourself and are going to have to add your own global light source (ie sun) and any other lighting.

You used a spotlight, they require you set distance, intensity, direction correctly.
Switch to top view and place a point light over the object , then switch to front view and move the light up.
