[BIG TROUBLE] Hard Drive Trouble :(

Hi everyone, I got a 300gb Maxtor 7200rpm hard disk recently and I have it hooked up with a hard disk enclosure so that I can use it with my laptop. At first, everything went fine and perfect, but recently (after about 7-8 months), when I turn on the enclosure, the hard disk doesn't operate... I have to wait either about 2-3 hours until the enclosure's LED start blinking again indicating me that the HD is working again (and I can hear the drive spinning once the LED flashes). It has happened to me with like 8 times already. Is it the enclosure's malfunction or is it that the hard disk is starting to die?? (PLEASE NO!!!!)

I tried another HD with the enclosure and the HD worked fine... I'm afraid it's the piece of crap maxtor HD that's screwing me over... damn it!!!

I was thinking of backing up the data with the following data recovery service:

Problem is, I have a $#%!load of divx movies and pr0n and stuff 😛
Will it be a problem?

maybe it was too hot for your hard drive... that's your problem 😛

dunno though, im depressed now 🙁 i've lost so much stuff 🙁
NOW I KNOW THAT I CAN NEVER TRUST MAXTOR AGAIN... THEY SUCK!!!!!!!

I still have an old 30gig WD caviar and the sh!t still runs decently... hmm

Calm down 😉
Firstly, get that drive onto a different machine. Let it cool down fully before doing so, and see if you can get anything off it. It's beginning to sound like the drive's on the way out, but you should be able to get something off it, considering that you can get it to power up sometimes.

im hoping for the best for my drive... im actually planning on getting all of the stuff backed up, then sending the crappy maxtor drive for an rma... then ebay the drive and never see maxtor ever again.

It always sucks to go through somehting like that (lesson one routine backups) almost all of us have had this happen. Keep in mind 2 things drives die no matter how good they are. You could tlak to 10 different people and get 10 different HD manufacturers that have died on them. I personally have had only a WD die on me. My room mate lost a seagate. A friend had a Deathstar 75GXP die on him (I had three that never gave me or anybody who used them later a problem). My dad lost one of his 18 GB Fuji 10K RPM SCSI. In Fact looking over this the only drive that hasn't Died with any of us is a Maxtor. It funny because my new system has 2 WDs 1 Hitachi, whille my other 2 systems 1 has a Seagate and the other a Maxtor.

Oh and one last thing check heat out on the HD before throwing it in an external enclosure. You never know how bad it might be getting in there for it if there is no active cooling.

This is good advice, and I hadn't thought of it myself.

Maxtor disks do seem to run noticeably hotter than their Seagate counterparts. It may be worth removing the top cover from the enclosure, running the drive up (from cold) and seeing how hot it gets.

Does the enclosure have a fan?

The enclosure i used was an EL-CHEAPO kingwin external enclosure... this one: http://www.topmicrousa.com/kikhexhddenu1.html
Nope, unfortunately i wasnt thinking of active cooling on behalf of the enclosure (bummer 😛)

Hmm... Fortunately I had another 120 gb HD that i have with me with a partial backup of the stuff i had in the 300gb hard disk...
Now I will never depend on one single drive and WILL make backups 🙁 lesson learned

Thanks for all the advice and now i will rma the maxtor disk so they renew it and once i get it back from em, i will sell the 300hd and will get a new one with a similar capacity.... which hd sounds good to you guys? there was a WD 400gb disk that was supposedly a resistant and reliable hd with a long runtime life. any suggestions for HDs and enclosures?

Thanks again
