So last Friday I got all the parts I needed, and then assembled (very carefully) my new kick ass computer. Now it won't even make my monitor turn on. It outputs no video from any of the graphics cards I have tried, and I have now come to my last resort..... taking it back to the OEM store(s) i got the parts at, and getting them to fix it..... The specs are as follows.....
Case: Lian-li PC-68 aluminum
Power supply: Generic 300W
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-7DX-RAID
CPU: Athlon-C Thunderbird 1.4Ghz OEM
Heatsink: Globalwin WBK38, 7000 RPM ball bearing fan.
RAM: 512MB (2x256) Micron cas2.5 DDR
Video Cards tried: 3dfx voodoo 3 2000, 3dfx voodoo 3 3000, 3D prophet (geforce256) All of these because of problems I will explain, and because my Kryo II hasn't arrived yet, (EBAY BASTARDS!)
Hard drives: 2 IBM 60GXP 40GB drives, in RAID ) via onboard promise fasttrak 100
Sound card: Sb live DE 5.1 (removed for troubleshooting purposes)
Network: Netgear 10/100 PCI (removed for troubleshooting purposes)
So, the first time I booted up, I used the Geforce 256 card I borrowed from a friend. ( he couldnt use it cuz he doesn't have AGP) Anyways, it worked fine for a few minutes, but then the picture started to get errors in it, until a couple minutes later, it was unreadable. So after messing with AGP settings and many other things, I wrote off that card to overheating (I even tried it in another computer). So I pulled the Voodoo 3 3000 outta my dads Dell (he didn't like that) and tired that. I got pretty far with that..... I successfully installed Win 98, despite having some problems with the RAID controller, it was generally working fine. Then I decided I wanted Win 2000, and thats where the problems started. I didn't want to piss off my dad anymore by taking his vid card, so I just got my friend to let me use his Voodoo 3 2000. So I put that in, and we started the win 2000 install. I ahd the array created and everything. Then Win2000 could'nt find any hard drives on my computer. So we messed around fdisking and trying to get it to recognize. But then the V3 200 started acting up! what started with a little graphic error turned into the card provide NO DISPLAY most times we restarted, and often freezing in the middle of everything. I then thought that maybe the CPU voltage was a little low. It was at default, so I put it to 1.80V I know that it can handle that. Then it worked a little better for a spell, but then it was all over. No video card would provide a display, and the bios would'nt beep the pc speaker either. SO I gave up.
Well, I know that most of you definitely know your shix when it comes to computers, but can any of you tell me what the hell happened to my new toy? Thanks.
