Tomorrow's update isn't simply a new map though. They're also updating the Dustbowl, Granary, and CTF Well maps with various tweaks as well as improvements to the Source Engine and SourceTV, all in what they're saying is the "largest update" since the game's launch last Fall

Woot! I'm really interested to see how they're handling the updates to the classes and new maps are always welcome.

I don't see any mention of the medic achievements + unlockable new weap in the patch notes, wonder if it (and the other unlockable new weaps for each class) are coming later. I'd imagine something like that would take a lot of testing to make sure they're balanced

From what I recall the class updates are not coming for a little while yet.

But getting Badlands is exciting plus of course this:

Added flamethrower "sizzle" sound when the Pyro is hitting a target
:thumbsup:

Evidently the new update is crashing servers like mad?

I tried playing but couldn't for more than a few minutes before the server would blow up. People were complaining that dustbowl and badlands were both crashing servers right and left.

Hmm I just played Badlands for like an hour right now and it went smooth.

I played Badlands for a bit last night, but it really did nothing for me on the first few run-throughs. I seem to be one of the few around these parts that is not bored with the regular maps, so I think I will just stick with them for now.

I heard a lot of people bitching about Bad Lands, but once I learned the map I thought it was pretty well designed, you can get anywhere pretty quickly.

Updates for TF2, Source Engine, SourceTV
February 14, 2008, 1:59 pm - Chris Bokitch

Updates to Team Fortress 2, the Source Engine, and SourceTV have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The full change list can be found below:

Source Engine

* Refactored how lightmaps are downloaded to the graphics card at level load. On some hardware configurations this can lower level load times significantly
* Optimized some particle systems to improve performance on some hardware configurations
* Player stats are now sent up as they change, rather than when the player dies
* Improved playback of sub-frame sounds
* Fixed a crash caused by alt-tabs during map load
* Eliminated unnecessary temporary memory allocation in scenefilecache

Team Fortress 2

* Badlands released
* Changes to Dustbowl
o Added a new access point to the stage2 attacker gates (drop-down left from spawn), allowing attackers a way to reach the left route without being subjected to the spam and sentry gun fire
o Fixed a gap in stage 3, cap 1 that allowed a player with to wiggle above the "ceiling" clip
o Fixed a gap behind stage 1, cap 1 house
o Fixed a high perch on stage1 cap1 house roof
o Fixed a perch offering view of nodraw textures and the skybox (stage1 cap2 rock barrier)
o Fixed a few places where rockets/demoman pipes could pass through non-solid models
o Sealed up a gap over stage1 lower startgate
o Clipped off tall windows in stage 3 to prevent sentry guns from behind built behind them
* Changes to Capture the Flag Well
o Fixed trains not starting on map spawn
o Removed cap association from red spawns that were spamming console
* Changes to Granary
o Removed spawn timing advantage from the middle (from -3 to 0)
o Fixed several model perch exploits (red, blue cp1 gate and blue cp2 gate pipe)
o Fixed a few places where players could get stuck between containers and silos
o Adjusted playerclips on red container that made it appear like players were floating
* Added a small delay (200 ms) before a zoomed sniper shot can get a critical hit
* Added server side convar mp_fadetoblack. Same functionality as Counter-Strike, used mainly during in-person tournaments and LAN events
* Added flamethrower "sizzle" sound when the Pyro is hitting a target
* Updated explosion debris to be a bit darker
* Fixed idle players not being kicked from the server if mp_allowspectators was set to 0
* Added ctf_well to the default mapcycle.txt file
* Added ctf_well to the default motd.txt file
* Fixed floor tile material type
* Fixed some weapon damage info missing from TF2 game stats
* Made some small changes to the Demoman viewmodel that were causing performance problems
* Added a new timer to the HUD to show the value of mp_timelimit. This is useful if you're playing a timed match on 2Fort, where you only set a timelimit on the server and no other win conditions.
* Added server log entry for buildings destroyed by their owner
* Fixed sentry gun shadows being clipped
* Updated glass material

SourceTV

* SourceTV now uses a hidden slot on the game server. This allows for 24 player servers to also have a SourceTV proxy connected to it
* Fixed Pyro's flamethrower flames not showing up in SourceTV

The update fudged some things. Statistics are broken and a new stutter/lag issue was introduced ... all verified by multiple people. I was just hoping they'd fix the annoying facestab-backstab bug.

I too was hoping for a fix to the backstack crap.... I did notice that loads were a tad faster but that sizzling sound with the flamethrower was AWESOME when I noticed it for the first time.

I did the Steam update last night. I did not have a chance to play yet, but am anxiously awaiting to try Badlands, and the pyro sizzle :).

Has Valve ever released a patch without introducing some kind of performance degrading issue?

this game is too noobish for me. Tried it for a while but even UT3 is more entertaining despite all it's flaws.

I will stand by my statement despite all your silly faces. The game is far too easy if you are a seasoned online fps player. within a few days I was usually one of the best on my team and in deathmatch servers nobody stood a chance. maybe there are a lot of younger people playing it and that's why.

TF2 is not about being the better player, its about maximizing team coordination.

Exactly. I could get a lot of kills as demoman or pyro but I support my team playing at medic or engineer even though I like getting into the action more but it helps the team more.
