I want to take advantage of that nice $15 deal on the apacer internal usb1.1 flash card reader, but I'm afraid usb1.1 might make it really slow. is there a big speed difference between most usb1.1 and 2.0 versions of card readers?

I've had one of each type of USB card reader (1.1 and 2.0) and honestly, it really depends on the size and number of the files that you are transferring from the card to your computer or vice versa.

I bought an internal 6-in-1 from Newegg for $22 shipped. I seem to recall it being advertised as USB 1.1, but is actually 2.0. Anyway, it's nice because it comes with a cable that adapts it for external use, and requires no drivers for ME, 2K, or XP. I haven't had it long enough to discuss long-term reliability. It serves my 1.1 world well, as I can back up my 128MB SD and 128MB CF cards in under a minute.

In any event, with regard to the original question, I doubt you'll notice much difference based on what I've read. But I guess you'll be better off spending just a few more dollars to be sure you're on the leading edge of technology.

depends on if you spent mucho dough on your memory card or not... the cheaper brands of storage are typically much slower then the super highspeed cards by lexar or viking. If you have those, then your transfers might be slower.
