Big Speaker and Sound Problem - Please Help

When someone signs on or off of AIM, when an error message pops up, or when I start a movie trailer, I hear a loud popping sound in my speakers and then the sound comes on. Note: This does not happen when I start regular music. The sound will get louder or smaller depending on the volume my speakers are at. I have unplugged the speakers from the subwoofer and from the sound card (and replugged in of course). I have powered down the computer, I have powered down the speakers (a switch on the subwoofer). I have no clue what it is. Please please help. This is beyond annoying. Thanks
