That's the tip of the iceburg in terms of pirated software. They can never stop it. $100 million is nothing compared to EVERYTHING that sits on FTP boards, IRC, and even programs like Morpheus. It's sooooo easy to pirate right now that you don't even need connections to get on good boards, just Morpheus.

?We intercepted the nerve,? Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca told reporters at a county warehouse where nearly 31,000 copies of the Windows operating system were held."

While it may be the "tip of the iceburg," it's a very important tip.

The people who download software are well aware they're pirating software. But copies that are nearly indistinguishable from the real thing are a serious threat to the average consumer who doesn't know to look for the holograms, etc. A consumer who thinks he's buying legitimate software, but in reality is getting screwed.

It sucks that it was all the same programs. Norton Antivirus and Windows XP / 2000 :( I would have expected a bigger variety.

Authorities also seized two containers of counterfeit Marlboro cigarettes, estimated to be worth $3 million

Damn. I didn't know counterfeiting cigs was a big business...

You know how much the ciggie companies mark up ciggarettes?

Software and ciggies and drugs are good markets to counterfeit simply becuase production costs are so much lower than selling prices.

This isn't warez, its actual pirated software... as in the ones in counterfeit boxes with manuals. Big difference. Warez aren't targetted unless the idiot gets careless and puts it on a school's server. They know warez are mainly an adolescent activity, people who normally wouldn't buy the software anyways, so there's no actual loss there. Pirated software however is counterfeited items, and a lot of times, people don't know the software they are buying are actually pirated... or they don't know the difference. Here there is a real loss, because you're actually take real sales away through these pirated software.
