Big screen viewing distance

I'm thinking of gettig a 50" DLP for my living room.

I have an L shaped couch so depending on what part of the couch you are sitting on the viewing distance would be somewhere from 8-12 feet approx.

What is optimal? and should 50" be a good size for this situation?

I would think with that viewing distance, shouldn't a 40" be sufficient?

I'm no expert at this, but that is just an opinion..

For movies you will probably want the "viewing angle" of the TV to be at least 30 degrees.

Possibly usefull link

for a 16x9 50inch display ... a distance between 5 and 8 feet is ideal.

EDIT: For 8 to 12 feet, I'd go with a 61 or 65 inch if affordable....

i have a 50" DLP at the foot of my bed in my bedroom. perfect size. for a living room, i wouldn't want less than a 65", you might even want to look into getting a projector.

Thanks for the link, I'll get some more accurate numbers when I get home.

my father just got a 42 inch dlp which says the viewing distance is 6.6 feet. im hideous at math...but id say 8-12 sounds about right.

where do they come up with these viewing distances?
Isn't 6 feet kind of close for a 40'something inch television?
Are the recommendations being constructed by blind people?

its 3x the diagonal of the panel you are viewing, just do the math

so, that would make the distance of a 42 inch, be set at about 10 feet..
So, by doing the math, as you've mentioned, 6.6 feet for a 42" is:
1) too close of a distance, by the math formula and
2) too close of a distance, based on common sense

I agree..

According to the website posted previously in this thread.. I should be sitting no farther than 3.8 feet from my 28" widescreen tv...
Sorry... But I am not even that close to my computer monitor.. I would rather have my vision last longer than my television

Not really. It depends on the source. Everything changed with HDTV since there is more resolution. If you want to see all the resolution, you often have to sit closer than you would imagine.

The viewing distances are all calculated by the "viewing angle."
The optimal figures are for large degrees of viewing angle, much like a movie theatre.

If you want to watch the ball game, regular tv shows, etc, and you don't want a "home theater" that will blow you away, then by all means, get a smaller display or use a longer distance.

For those saying "blaabla bla for the blind"
I have better then 20/20 vision.

I sit 7 feet away from a 61inch 4:3 TV for my home theater.
Home Theater

I also sit 2.5 to 3 feet away from a 27inch 16x9 720P LCD in my master bedroom on my computer desk.
Bedroom

It's by no means necessary to have a shorter viewing range, a 50 inch can still be enjoyed 15 feet away for example, it's just best or the most "real" at closer range.

ill measure this in a few hours, my sister has a 37in plasma and im pretty sure teh couch is 8+feet back and its perfectly fine
woo woo discovery HD thearter

Exactly....

I have a 50" DLP and sit 7.5 ft away... Of course I have all HD Programming....

If I was not watching HD, just plain ol' SDTV, than for me I can sit back as far as 15ft... pretty much I would have to put my couch up against the back wall opposite of the TV.

So, that should answer your question.

High Defintion Programming : 6.5 - 8 ft approx
Standard Definition Programming: 6 - 15ft approx

I just bought a 42" hdtv last night. My viewing distance is 8'. I haven't gotten use to it, it still seems ridiculously big compared to my crappy old 27 incher.

42" should be plenty

Unfortunately if you are right on top of the thing you will see the compression in the signal, so there is a tradeoff.

I think at 7.5 ft with that TV should be just perfect. For HDTV I sit 1ft farther than the recommeneded 6.5ft, but it helps with not seeing any compression artifacts... and its a good distance for viewing SD Programming too.

That's a great place to start from. From those base numbers, you adjust for your preferences and your source quality. I'm about 8' away from my 50" plasma (a bit too far), and 11' away from my 100" projection screen (just about right).
