Big problems booting Windows ME

I am having problems loading Windows ME. I installed ME about 2 months ago on a fresh reformatted drive. It worked flawlessly until now. When I try to boot up, the comp gets done with the BIOS screen and proceeds to load Windows ME. This is when it suddenly stops and reverts to the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen. I havn't installed any new programs lately and I really don't think this is a hardware problem. I was thinking that it may have something to do with drivers (particularly directx8.) I can boot it up in safe mode and I did a scandisk but there were no errors. I can't really figure out anything else I could do that would be of help in safe mode. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated because I do not know a lot about Windows ME.

Thanks,

I have been able to isolate the problem to the system.ini file. Disabling this file at startup and using the backup one lets the computer boot fine. Any idea what setting could be wrong in system.ini to cause the shut downs?
