i just built an amd 1ghz system for my cousin and there is one problem i cant fix. it has an IBM 75gxp 45gig hdd in it. the problem is transfer rate. when installing win me...takes a very long time. installing Q3A...again very long time. overall performance is very slow on the HDD. i know for a fact that there is nothing wrong with the hdd, because i sold it to him. if anyone knows how to fix this problem please help me out. its on an abit kt7a (non raid) board. i put the hdd on a 80 pin ata100 cable on ide1 and used an 40wire ata 33 cable for the toshiba dvd rom on ide2. also playing dvd's and quake 3 is choppy when the hdd is being accessed. could it be that i didnt format the hdd? or could it be that i made the whole 45gig 1 partition? i didnt want to repartition it because it had about 20gigs of mp3z we didnt want to lose. the data was already on the hdd when i was installing winME.

complete specs:
t-bird 1ghz 266
abit kt7a
ibm 75gxp 45gig
256mb pc 133 micron ram
sb live value
geforce 2mx
usr 56k faxmodem

[*]Install the 4-in-1 drivers from here.
[*]Afterwards make sure DMA is enabled.

Powerquest makes a product called Partitio nmagic. Lets you resize partitions without losing date. Win2k may have this built in, but I dont belive so. Also, most Linux distros have a partition utility built in, you can fire one up to change your partitions.

You can partition and format form within win2k
but you still lose all the data. Go with Partition Magic.

Definitely sounds like a dma problem...like john said install 4 in 1's make sure during that install you check the box for udma mode...then make sure bios is set for auto on the dma on all the channels..then make sure dma is checked in windows under system properties device manager.

Also make sure dvd drive is dma enabled as well...

Get hdtach 2.61 program and bench it...I would think you should get 27-30mb sustained transfer rates, burst rate of 70mb/s plus and access time of 13ms or less.

thanx for the replies guys. i should of mentioned that i did install the 4in1 drivers. both 4.29 and 4.31 no success. checked bios and both ide devices are on auto.

after installing winme i installed the 4 in 1 then directx then the video drivers. then i went to device manager and checked dma...still no luck. any more suggestions? might a simple defrag work? but i dont see y a defragmented hdd would affect Q3A since it loads almost everything into memory.

I have noticed when installing any of the new systems with a UDMA-5 HDD, you really need to install from scratch. I think the best way is to change the setting in the BIOS down to UDMA-2 and use a normal IDE ribbon cable. Once you have the operating system installed, then throw on the VIA 4 in 1 drivers (the latest ones of course). Then install the ATA100 drivers and change over the ribbon cable.

nope, no !marks in the device manager....everything looks fine from the device manager.

I dont think the abit bios has the option to change from udma5 to udma2. but ill check again tomorrow. cant do it now cause the comp isnt at my house.
