I find it annoying to have to flip pages constantly on a smaller phone. I have pretty good eyesight so the Kindle app on my Note 3 with relatively small text and tiny borders makes for a pretty good reading device. I don't know - probably close to twice the amount of text per screen than an iPhone.
I use my iPhone 5C for web browser (main use), gaming, texting and phone calls amongst photography and listening to music and podcasts. The 4" screen is great for this as it's a convenient size between being usable for all purposes and being small enough to be a pocketable and one handed device. It's the best of both worlds in that regard if you ask me.

People can and do have this exact rationale for every single size up to 5.2", though. Personally I think the S4/Nexus 5 size of 5", minimal bezel, and ~130g is the sweet spot.

I find the Note 3 comfortable to hold and not very different from Moto RAZR M in my pocket. I wear mostly Levi 501 classic to work and I have no issues with Note 3. When I wear tailored slim cut suit I just put the phone in left breast pocket.
I like my phones the same way my woman (singular, just married 2013): Naked.
Also, when dudes complain about larger than iPhone phones, I ask them to show me their wallet. Most of the time its larger and 5x thicker than my Note 3. Case closed.

If there's one thing the internet should have taught you, it's that claiming any anecdote as an "open and shut case" is a bad idea.
That's a Moto X on the left. Point being, while you're happy carrying around a Note 3 all day, not everyone else is going to be.

Right pocket alone I can fit my wallet, my keys, an RX100 and Disneyland guide maps. Left pocket has a Moto X, one of those cylindrical medicine bottles, a 16.9oz water bottle, and two spare batteries for the RX100. Only wearing 30x30 jeans. Although I guess for most people that's not comfortable; I'm already well used to it.

Now think about the upcoming phones; the S5, iPhone 6, LG G3 Galaxy Note 4, all are very bigger than what you've mentioned. As you said i too had a problem of holding those stupid bigger things and putting into my pocket.
there are different ideal sizes for different use cases... I think the iphone 5(c/s) is ideal for firmly clasped 1-handed usage. moto X, SGS4 and LG G2 occupy an ideal range for slightly suspended 1 handed usage. if you're just going to use your phone 2 handed there's little reason not to go all the way to Note 3 or G Pro 2 size. Even a 7 inch tablet would be an option if it could make phone calls.
I've used 5.5 inch phones and found it's not entirely impossible to use them in one hand in cases of high need. But the risk of accidentally dropping them is usually not worth it.

Dropped my HTC 8X last week, cracking the screen in the process, and have been mulling over my choices. No more HTC from our vendor, so it's between the 920 and the 1520 for me.
What I find most appealing in a phone is the wireless charging and the large screen due to my steadily failing eyesight. I cannot read a text on my 8X without my reading glasses now, so even tho I'd pay $199 extra for the 1520, I think it might be a better phone for me than the smaller 920 (which I can get for $1).
This time I will be investing in a case for it. I just hope it fits in my shirt pocket.

Note 3 - need deep pockets. I've had it drop our of a shallower jacket pocket so never doing that again. Summer is coming. Not many shorts with deep pockets. Cargo pants are an option but putting anything heavy down by the thigh means hitting against it with every step. Had that happen with keys. Sucks.

No I carry a firearm, spare magazine, & flashlight. I refuse to add more plus it risks revealing my weapon when grabbing for my phone. In the pocket eliminates this risk for me too.

Just got back from the AT&T store - damn, that 1520 is gaudily large !!! It was on a security cable but the saleman did manage to cram it into his pocket nevertheless.
As rh71 pointed out, you will need to be aware of its unnerving ability to easily fall out of your pocket when you bend over, so I'm not sure how I want to handle that possibility. Obviously a heavy duty case will help tremendously, but you still end up picking the phone up off the floor more than you want to.

There are also other factors when it comes to comfortable one handed use. I personally think the iPhone is one of the worst one handed phones because you're stuck with a regular, non-gesture keyboard so typing one handed takes forever. With swipe style typing I can blast out sentences quickly and easily with just the one hand.

I've started using the dictation (mic button) a lot more than using the swype feature (Google keyboard). It's pretty accurate and you always go back to make individual corrections, but it's still a ton faster. Problem is dictating what you want to say is a lot different than speaking naturally to someone. I always end up doing it multiple times to complete my thoughts. Swyping even seems slow. God I miss a full keyboard anytime I'm not at my desktop.
