Big old noisy fan problem in rack

I have this old fan in the top of a computer rack. It gets some really good airflow though. What I was thinking was I could get a switch that would turn it on and off as the temperature got too high. It uses a regular AC power plug. I'm sure they have some sort of device that goes between the plug and the power socket that could do this. Haven't found anything on the net so far though. Anybody seen anything like this?

you COULD do that, but i would recommend just buying a new fan for your case. newegg has them for like 8 bucks, and most of the new ones include a temperature probe so the speeds vary with the temperature, to keep noise down

You could replace the fan with a quieter model. Smarthome.com sell fans for dataracks and may even have ones that will automatically turn on when things get toasty.

Pyro: This is a rack, not a case. The fan is (as far as I know) not a standard part. It's about an 8 or 9 inch fan in the ceiling of a server rack.

Windogg: That is a cool site! All sorts of home automation. I searched for fans, but I didn't see any that would work for this. Did I just miss it?

Thanks for the responses all!

Hmmm... thought i saw a rack cooling fan there once. I think I know what you have now. The sucker is about a foot wide and can move 500CFM of air per minute. The thing is also loud around 50dB+. I'm sure you could rig something up with a few parts.
