Title says it all. Now I am open for more types of jobs in my field. However, when I looked at the next steps and documentations, I came across something unusual on the NYS website document which I have linked bellow.
Pre-Licensing Course Student’s Manual (ny.gov)
It says my permit can get suspended for 60 days if any point in time within the next 6 months I am caught using a GPS. Can someone explain why NYS thinks GPS is a reason for suspension of a permit during the 6 month period?

Huh, I wonder if it means specifically operating one while driving or something.

They don't want young people who just got their license to be distracted by anything and the penalty for doing anything "distracting" is harsh. (many states including Connecticut won't even allow an un-licensed passenger in the car with them at all for the first year driving)

From the language used I would have to think that even a zero-touch mobile device operated only by voice would still be illegal for a newly licensed driver.

This is as it should be.... in fact the penalties for use of a mobile device while driving aren't nearly harsh enough for everyone not just novice/young drivers.

Note, they say 60-day suspension, on conviction. Look up what it takes to be convicted of use of a GPS while driving.

I have a feeling, that that has to do with "operating" (touching) the GPS while moving, thus a "moving violation" subject to conviction.

I think the idea is that they want you to stop and pull over safely, to use your phone, or program your GPS.

I highly doubt that they have outlawed GPS units entirely.

Yet another Amol S. thread, where he misses the accurate picture.

In Connecticut it's 100% zero-tolerance for minor 1st-year drivers to USE any mobile device or to drive any un-licensed minor who isn't a relative. (this has greatly reduced accident-rates among new/young drivers)

No idea what they do about devices like a GPS built into the car.

How long have you job searching? It seems like a while and now you finally get a DL?

Still job searching in this red hot employee's economy? Jeez

As for the NYS thing: many states have this now because distracted driving kills. They don't want you even thinking about fiddling with something that is distracting for new drivers, even when "hands free".

If it was Ohio I'd think it's my cousin. She's 28, lives at home, has some college art degree, was studying to get her driver's license for several years(!) after college (not sure if she ever got it), and has never been employed.

Like regular driver license? That seems like such an odd rule. If you are in a situation where you need GPS I guess you can just put it in the glove box and have it do voice over the sound system, but if you get pulled over for any reason and it decides to go off during that time you'll be in serious trouble.
