Surely this practice of online suppliers is counter-productive? I mean, sure there's going to be a guy out there who wants say a new laptop, then realises that it's going to be quite some time before it arrives and goes ahead with the order to its absolute completion, but surely for every person like that there have to be at least 5 who cancel their order at various stages including the kind who ring up and waste lots of employees' time? Then there's also the chance of the user rage-quitting that supplier's site and orders elsewhere.

Sounds like they just have some supplier in China they're using to ship from. Be careful doing business with anyone that takes money up front and ships later. In many cases, they're just fake companies and just using the interwebs to rake in a bunch of cash before disappearing.

In my case it's a big laptop supplier that I know other legitimate suppliers use.

Newegg has been doing that exact same thing on their website since the whole pandemic started. It is items for items sold and shipped by Newegg, and not factoring any 3rd party seller.

Many times it will show in stock, but when you click on the item, the delivery date can be weeks or even months out.

Kind of reminds me of when you look for eBay "buy it now" purchases that state delivery time as a month from when you're buying it.

Yep, B&H advertised the same thing on a discontinued product that listed for $3899 and sold, and ordered by me, for $1499. Now let's see if it actually arrives.
