Big fire near campus burns down the whole apartment complex...

About 10:30 tonight, an apartment complex right on the edge of campus (Clemson University) caught fire. It's pretty much all wood so it looks like it's going to be a total loss. It's wild... I don't know anyone that lives there outside of one of my teachers, but I don't think I could imagine what it would be like to live there...

Picture that someone else took of the Ridge in flames 🙁

Man that sucks. Two buildings in my complex in Atlanta burnt down like that. It was a very intense experience. My building was barely spared thanks to the firefighters. It was never the same again though.

my college is building not one, but 3 all wood apartments adjacent to our campus. at least housing for 2500. After being promised that mine was going to be steel, imagine my anger when I noticed that ALL 3 ARE WOOD. Heck- Dorms burn down too... Seaton hall... and yet somehow its legal to house thousands of 18-20 year olds in an all wood building??? WTF???!?!

Approximately 140 students lost their belongings and school supplies. Luckily the on campus book store is loaning the students books till they can get new ones. Clemson also deposited $50 in "Tiger Stripe" money into all the students' account who lost their homes as emergency funds and is allowing all the students to be able to get $200 loans from the Burser's office. People responded to the needs to these students really quickly and generously. They had to turn away some people from what I hear because they didn't have enough room for all the supplies being dropped off at the relief center. Also, IBM has agreed to loan 85 refurbished laptops for the students for 30 days and will allow any student who want to to buy them to purchase them at a discounted price--this won't all all 140 students to have a computer to work on, but it's pretty cool considering they put scrounged together the 85 laptops in only 2 days time. It should be here by Tuesday for Clemson University's Laptop Center to set up for the students and the Laptop Center will be distributing them on Wednesday. Hopefully no dumbass will show up trying to pretend to be a victim since Clemson does have a record of where students live.

I'm still amazed that no one was seriously injured. I heard that someone was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, too, but I think that may be the local news getting the story mixed up. The relief effort has been so impressive. They sent an email yesterday at like 3pm saying that they were no longer able to accept clothes, etc. and I saw someone on a message board say that they had enough clothes for 600 people. I only knew one person that lived at the Ridge - one of my teachers actually - but they really push the One Clemson thing on campus and it really showed these past couple of days.
