Big difference between a 1GHz AMD Thunderbird and Athlon 64 3800+????

I am working on replacing a system based on an AMD Thunderbird 1GHz (ABIT KT-7RAID MB/1.5GB RAM)....I built it in early 2001....

Now I am reeducating myself on the CPUs out there and trying to make some comparisons...so I see the Athlon 64 3000 or 3200 and note that they run at 2.0-2.4GHz

How much of a difference can I expect from an old 1.0GHz system and a new system that (seems to) runs at ~2.2GHz?

Any articles that review the change I might expect? Thanks for any feedback.

Look for the Tom's Hardware CPU charts, they should have a comparison between the two processors. And yes, the difference is HUGE! The thunderbird is two generations old.

There will probably be a HUGE noticeable difference. When I went from my 1ghz to a athlon 2500+ I almost crapped myself. Now i have a P4 3.4 and it's just getting better.

Today I slapped in some crazy memory I got off ebay and went from 512mb of PC3200 single channel to 2, 1gb sticks of PC5300 dual channel. (only cost $157) The improvement just from the memory is INSANE. Photoshop loads twice as fast. It's pretty crazy.

I guess what I'm trying to say is every little step along the way will improve performance.

i thinks there will be 400% increase in performance such as u unzip a big winzip file 4 times faster. 4 minutes become 1min

What do you use the computer for?

If it's just everyday internet stuff, making documents, flash games, etc. then you're probably fine already.
