if i had the money to spend on either, i'd definately go with a powerbook. i'm not a mac guy, but sony just doesn't compare.

I don't like Sony notebooks...very blah.

Dells are better, but like most people said, the chasis is kinda...meh...

PowerBooks are nice...just gotta watch out for scratching the paint off 😉

I'd get the powerbook...just make sure you get applecare. don't want that sucker to be ruined

I got a $150 educational discount, which is around US$95. I think the Americans get a higher educational discount though.

As for the $2400 TiBook, that's if you're a student developer I'm guessing. You have to register and pay money to get that designation and I think you can only make one large purchase like this in your lifetime.

Apparently the paint process has been revamped. Something about some batches of the shell not having a proper paint baking step or something.

A lot of people recommend Apple systems for that type of work. However, I have done similar things on my PC without any trouble. It really depends on which type of system you are more comfortable with. You say you had been using a PC previously, so probably you would want to stick with a PC. The Dell laptop that a previous poster mentioned at around $2500 dollars looks like a good buy. This is just speculation from me though. I don't really have much experience with laptops, so take my recommendations with a grain of salt. =)

I'm in the student developer program. It's $100 to join plus you need to be a CS student or taking software development classes.

Now that I have it, I will never get another system with FireWire capability. Didn't see that listed in the specs you listed for the GRX.

If you don't have all the applications you currently use for Mac OS, you're going to spend a bundle. While you can use Virtual PC to run PC software successfully on a Mac, it is torturously slow & clunky.

That said, I've got a 667mhz TiBook. It is a beauty. My purse weighs more than this PowerBook. (They solved the chipping paint problem before I bought mine in March.) The titanium feels like silk under my fingertips. Apple has it all over other manufacturer's when it comes to design. OS X rules, and the iApps that come with it are the ultimate in productivity.

caveat: Apple ALWAYS charges sales tax. Don't know if you can get educational discounts from retailers other than Apple, but the sales tax might be more than what you save w/the discount.

By the way, it's only $2699 if you forego the SuperDrive, and get the 40 GB hard drive.

Also, it's only $2739 if you get 1 GB of RAM. (ie. double your RAM for $40 if you live in the US, but not for us in Canada 🙁).

I am a PC guy.

I have used PC's exclusively for a while and I used to rag on macs like no other.
I now work in an art college (where I went to school). I used to do all my flash, photoshop etc etc on PC's.
I am now in charge of the service bureau at the college, we do high end colour output for students ... go with the mac.
I'm waiting for the new ibook to hit the shelves locally and I'll be getting one. I primarily want one because the geek in me lusts after OSX.

Bashing on macs is just easy, it's easy cause everyone does it. Sure, PC's are faster, they're cheaper, but macs are NICER. 🙂
I still use both, I'm not switching or anything.. I love all computers.

edit: PC's can be suped up ricers. Macs are out of the box M3's
Or something like that.

great comparison, smp what college did u go to, ill be graduating from Columbia College in Aug with a double major in Graphic Design and Interactive multimedia

Well, I have the 1ghz Powebook on order myself. I know people who have Sony laptops, and I have a decent Dell for work...

Get the Powerbook. For what you do, it's a really really nice machine. Also, 8lbs is a lot (at least to me), and the battery life seems to not be so good on it, either. I think the TiBook looks a LOT better, and in my experience, Sony laptops weren't exactly the highest quality things I ever saw. shrug.

No doubt. I have an Inspiron 8100 and that thing is a brick! I do not haul that thing around. The Sony weighs close to 10 lbs which is fine if you need a desktop replacement but if you want to take it with out, I'd shy away.

Ontario College of Art and Design

Apple is still the industry leader as far as graphics are concerned (not 3D).
Think of it this way, if you're an industrial designer, would you get a tibook or a dell/sony?

Again, the car thing.
Not that I prefer one over the other, but they are just different.
There are plenty of affordable cars that go fast, then there are M3's. (you might be able to tell that i have a soft spot for that car)
It's up to whoever to choose whatever.
Macs are like a lifestyle thing too, an image .. which is kind of stupid to me. You wouldn't catch me dead surfing the web on a tibook in starbucks :\

smp, are you sure you can't get an educational discount somehow (as an employee) at OCAD?

Hikari, Christina from MacNN I presume?
