Big chunk of metal on the processor

So, I get my new Athlon PC today (my last computer was a 386), and I notice a big chunk of thin-sliced metal on my processor. It looks strange and it's probably heavy. Plus, it has a ventilator on top. Who put them there?!

I'm just going to throw out that chunk of metal and the ventilator on top. Hopefully, the processor will be able to cool better this way. Wish me luck.

Clean it off really good too - you need to get the air right there on the core itself. ;)

if you keep the weird metal, make sure you spread at least 2 tubes of thermal grease on the entire surface of the CPU before you put the metal back on.
