Howdy all,

I met up with a bunch of old friends in LV this past weekend to do some partying. Some of them were winning pretty big in the casinos so I decided to try my luck on friday night. Armed with the whole 10 bucks I had alloted for gambling, I sat down at a video poker machine and started playing.

I wasn't really paying attention to much other than the fact that my ten dollars was disappearing very quickly. On one particular hand, I held an ace, king, and jack (all spades) in the hopes of making the jacks or better rule. Well wonder of wonders, I get dealt a queen and 10 of spades to win....a whopping 75 bucks!

In my pessemistic mind, I knew I really had no chance of winning anything big, so instead of playing 5 quarters every round, I only did 1. The embarrassing part was that the woman next to me started to congratulate me until she saw what I was betting and then she started laughing at me!

So instead of coming home with a progressive jackpot of $10k, I've got a story that I can tell forever.

Now, I've got a question...are the odds of winning a royal flush on one quarter in a slot machine the same as if I had played 5 quarters? i'm guessing no and that's what lets me go to sleep at night.

I hope all y'all's turkey day went well!

My father-in-law had the same exact thing happen to him while at the Silversmith Casino in Wedover, NV. He ended up with $1000 instead of $5000, since the machine was not progressive. I attribute it to his severe case of alcohol intoxication. The good thing was that he gave me and my wife $100 each to go gamble away!

the odds are required by law to be set independent of the amount bet.

Yup, and the casino's don't even know the odds on the video machines, according to the discovery channel. They're set by a top secret chip that goes in at the shop that makes the machines.

there was a casino guy busted a couple of yrs ago. he had a mod chip that changed the payout ratio.

The casino & the state gaming comission know the overall payout odds. The overall payout odds are set so that the casino makes a set profit of a few percent. The state keeps up with the money thruput & the odds as the casinos are taxed on the profit.

Congrats and don't dwell on 1 quarter or 5 quarters.

The point is you walked out a winner and that's all that counts. think of the people that drop thousands and never see a dime back.

that so about the odds, huh? oh well...

like Windogg said, I'm not dwelling on the quarters. hell, I put in one coin and 250 came popping out.

and there was no WAY I was going to keep gambling...I think I used up all my probability reserves for the next decade. (good think I met my girlfriend BEFORE I ever thought of going to vegas!)
