So if you want a sip of water on a long trip through Texas you better pull over first. Here before long they are going to make it illegal to talk to your passengers or listen to the radio.

Yeah, well you know it would be nice not to be creamed by some vapid soccer-mom bimbo's ginormous Escalade because she's distracted by her blathering away on her cell and wrestling with her cadre of offspring in the back seat. How about paying attention to the road and other drivers and making it a little safer out there for the rest of us?

Hear, hear! Driving is the single most dangerous thing most people do with any regularity. It deserves one's undivided attention.

Handsfree headsets don't make one damn bit of difference. It's not the hands, it's the mind.

There is no excuse to driving while talking on your cell phone. Studies have proven time and time again that talking on your phone while driving is just as dangerous as driving drunk. People actually take drunk driving seriously, how long will it take people to realize that cell phones are just as dangerous?

Honestly, I think it's the concentrating on what's coming out of that little speaker that's the most distracting. If you could somehow put the person's voice through your car's speakers, it would be just like talking to someone sitting next to you.

Exactly. Carrying on a conversation, even with someone right next to you, takes concentration. And the level of concentration required for that conversation is then deducted directly from your ability to focus on the road.

Maybe you can get away with driving distracted (for a while at least) in low-population areas, but I drive the Southern California freeways regularly and it's full-on combat out there. Focus is the name of the game.
