BIG BROTHER/BIG SISTER

<< i have heard of it, but what exactly is it? >>

it is a program that pairs underprivilaged kids with older volunteers and they act as a big brother/sister and take them out on fun activities and be a friend and mentor

I asked the same question here a month or so ago, and got very minimal response. I've filled out the application for the program, and am going through the screening process now. I'll keep you in the loop of how things go as i find out.

I am "Big Brother" at my work. I watch all of the emails and internet trafiic. It is fun to see who is "doing" who! 😉

I think the program is a great idea, and I would love to do it, but my work schedule wouldn't allow it.

I give mad props to anyone that is involved in the Big Brother/Sister program.

Glenn...I have my final "inquisition" interview in the morning...pretty nervous.

N8 I said the same thing for the last four years....it's all so much BS in the big picture😀

Good luck Glenn!

It's not really for "underprivilaged" kids only. I had a big brother when i was younger (til i was about 15 or 16 i guess) and i had him since i was 9.5 years old. My mom only signed me up because my parents were divorced and my dad never saw me. We're no longer officially big/little brothers but we're really good friends.
He has two kids (was childless when we were paired up) but his wife died of cancer last year, so I've been supporting and helping him as much as I can. We'll be lifelong friends for sure. He is one of the most interesting, make that the most interesting, people I've ever met.

I'm almost 20 now btw, so wow...been 10 years. hard to believe.

I commend anyone who does this. Anyone who does is a saint because it really does make a difference. I'll be doing the same when I'm older.

Kami,

Thanx for sharing! Ever think you'll go "back" into the program?

Just curious.

Have any pointers to offer?

Yeah I'll go back and be one in the future for sure.

Pointers? Hmmm.

Well if you get a shy kid don't be discouraged...might take some time for them to "open up" or be more relaxed. Don't come on too strong... i.e. when you first meet don't say something like "if there's ever anything you need to talk about, give me a call"...take it easy and just be there for them. Act as both a friend and a mentor/father figure. Find out what he likes and do it. You don't always have to spend money either...just hook up some video games or a movie every once in a while. Go fishing...play sports...pick him up from school at lunch hour and take him out for pizza. little stuff like that
