Nothing like the desert when it's nice out.

From Emory Peak
Looking Into the Basin

In the Basin, on the trail to the window
Farther down the window trail, from the top of a rock I climbed

From a ridge we decided to climb, off of the Lost Mine trail
From the top of Lost Mine trail

Pictures are not intended to be works of art, just cool things I could point my old and broken digital at for the memories. My camera was not functioning for a few days, but some other people in the trip had working cameras. I'll add some shots from their collections as soon as I get my hands on them.

Big Bend is an awesome place. Just go this time of year, don't put yourself through a summer there.

I plan on taking the wife in the near future. Just a few hours away.

For the fun of it, map it in google and do a satellite view. It is very pretty just to look at even from the air.

I love going out to Big bend. My friend owns land out there right outside of Lajitas. This time of the year is great because it is not 105 degrees in the shade. We usually spent the week trawling around in his jeep scrambler and drinking beer. Nothing better. Plus at night there is an amazing sound, absolute silence.

One question though...is the park safe to hike alone? Being that close to Mexico should one be worried about illegals hiding and robbing hikers?

I've heard of people spotting crossers, but you've got nothing to worry about while the sun's up, and during the night you'd probably rather run into a mexican than a mountan lion.

Bottom line is that it's never safe to hike alone, anywhere.

So go with buddies. The park is great. The weather was actually fairly chilly. We wore T-shirts when we were exerting ourselves, and sweatshirts otherwise. At night it got cold. I was doing the coat over a sweatshirt in a sleeping bag, and I slept OK.

Both haven't eaten in days though so it ends up being a tough call
