Since when do the majority of designer and engineers have to worry about working with the line.

The real reason US car companies are in trouble is they do not want to be in the car business. They want to be banks, media companies, etc..

Look at GE. With the exception of some defense work, they got out of the electronics business. They became a credit card and media company.
