Biden says Hillary might have been a better pick for VP

Joe Biden said Wednesday that Hillary Clinton ?might have been a better pick than me? to be Barack Obama?s running mate.

The Delaware senator was responding to an audience member at a town hall meeting in Nashua, N.H., who criticized Clinton and said it?s a good thing Obama chose Biden over her.

?Make no mistake about this, Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United States of America. Lets get that straight,? Biden said in Clinton?s defense.

?She?s easily qualified to be vice president ? and quite frankly, might have been a better pick than me. But she?s first rate. I mean that sincerely. She is first rate. So let?s get that straight,? he said.

The comment comes after Clinton tried to assuage tensions last month at the Democratic National Convention between the Obama campaign and her supporters ? disenchanted over her primary loss and her absence on the Democratic ticket.

John McCain spokesman Ben Porritt within minutes sent around an e-mail saying the choice of Biden was Obama?s ?most important decision of this election.? The e-mail then skewers Biden for suggesting ?that he wasn?t the right man for the job and that Hillary Clinton would have been a better choice.?

It was the latest shot in a spate of political crossfire between the two presidential campaigns. Biden earlier in the day compared McCain?s attacks on Obama to the attacks McCain faced during the 2000 White House race ? when Biden rose to McCain?s defense.

Addressing an audience of about 300 political donors in Boston, the Delaware senator said he would respond forcefully to anyone attacking Obama in the manner of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the group that questioned Democrat John Kerry?s military record during the 2004 campaign.

?Swiftboating is not going to work this time. And the reason it?s not is, No. 1, I?m going to smack ?em right square in the chops,? Biden said.

Biden did not get into specifics, but a spokesman said he was referring to a new McCain ad suggesting the Illinois senator supported sex education for kindergartners, as well as a recent ad from a McCain fundraiser that linked Obama to 1960s radical William Ayers.

Interesting. So after Obama claiming countless times that Biden was the best choice for VP candidate, Biden lets out another gaffe by suggesting Clinton would have been a better VP candidate than he.

I have a lot more respect for Biden than Obama. At least he's sincere, I don't see anything wrong with him saying that.

Hillary would have been a bad pick not because of her qualifications, but because of her personality and the distraction she'd be in the white house. A bad all-around setup for Obama. Biden knows his role and what would be expected of him in an Obama white house.

I saw it on the news last night. I wasn't surprised he would go out of his way to say that.
I'm sure they are keenly aware they need to keep Hillary in good graces. She could easily throw this election in several subtle ways which probably wouldn't affect her running down the road.

I respect Biden's honesty. But at the same time, it's still just politics. He wouldn't be saying this if not for Palin.

But to be fair, Palin probably wouldn't be here either if Hillary had been chosen.

This is what I love about Biden. He will stick the entire foot into his mouth because he doesnt think before speaking. Kind of like Bush.

I am not buying the resident lefties on this board he is going to wipe the floor with Palin in the debates. I think even he said not to expect it because he isnt much of a debater.

The keyword here is "might" and Fox is playing it like it is made of gold. In other words, he doesn't know for certain because the future has yet to play itself out. It doesn't mean he doubts himself in any way or that he really believes that without a shadow of a doubt that she would have been a better pick. He is simply claiming that he believes that Hillary could have done a good job too. Think about how many times you use the word "might" and what it means when you say it.

Beyond that, I pretty much agree with Atreus21. It's also just politics.
