It doesnt mean he wants Trump back. It doesnt mean Trump is a better alternative. The current president is being criticized for what he's currently doing. Thats all.

At least he is actively fighting a disease that has so far killed about 600,000, where as Trump minimized the danger because he was afraid it might affect the economy, and then compounded the error by actively denigrating the safety measures that could probably have saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
As to the OP: from what I have read of the comments on the latest G7, our allies view the efforts of "the doddering old fool" much more favorably than those of Trump.
Maybe he didnt mention Trump by name, but the comparison was obvious, especially since he use the typical Trumpian attack strategy.

Shit and there I was thinking in order to reach across the aisle by showing the Repubs back here in the US of A how Biden could be just like Trump at sucking up to Putin while treating our allies worse than Trump did all in order to impress the Repubs of just how he could be like or even be better at what the Repubs so admired about Trump and what he did at Helsinki back in '18.
I am disappointed that Biden refused to behave exactly as Trump did in order to impress the Repubs that he could do just as well as Trump did.
Oh well, there's so many other ways that Biden can show the Repubs how behaving exactly as Trump did will impress them beyond reproach. I bet Biden could beat Trump's golf vacay record that would really impress the shit out of them or how Biden could lie much more often than Trump did of which would make the Repubs really impressed. I see this as an attitude, your own assumptions someone else is assuming and a moral uprightness toward it. You probably react with fear toward what you regard as judgmentalism because in your past you have been hurt by it, and would not like yourself for doing it which also means you will, as here.
