What advantage? In 2000, Gore was the incumbent, based on being Vice President, which was based on him using his father's machinery and organization to inherit a Senate seat.

In 2004, W ran on his own record and gave John Kerry a good spanking.

Naw, I was thinking we should go even further back, like to Prescott Bush. And, don't even think for a minute that if Dubya would have been more successfull, Jeb would have run too. Bush even tried to put in a good word for his brother, remember that?

Topic Title: Biden aiming to keep seat in family?

Cheers for the nepotism from our next Vice President. Senate seats under the Christmas tree!

As Delaware's Attorney General, Biden's son appears to be qualified for the job. What's your problem?

We have a little thing called elections. Qualified or not, the people didn't choose him. And for you people who ask what Delaware Senators have to do with us, you might want to take a government class and see exactly what that job entails.

I don't like political familial relationships so close together. It just smells alot like the kind of inherited power systems that this country was founded in direct philosophical opposition to.

I still firmly believe that GHWB as 41, and then GWB as 43 is as close as this country has ever gotten to abandoning it's principles. It just makes me want to puke.

Except....both men were elected into office. Guess you must be referring to the Kennedys.

Them too.

It is unequivocal and uncontroversial that GWB used his fathers machinery and organization at every step of his political career. Giving him an incumbent advantage, plus.

Having said that, anyone who voted for the son of 41 in 43 was plainly turning their back and spitting on everything America stands for.

Well, the thing is I agree with your OP if your complaint is institutional. That is to say, if you believe that Democracy (big D) is not being served by political machinery that pumps-up families as candidates or appointees. Witness the present day Duncans and Udalls, etc.

The most egregious example is this kind of anti-democratic pseudo-monarchy is of course the son of President 41 becoming candidate for 43. This completely flew in the face of everything that this country stands for.

If on the other hand--you just meant to restrict your complaint to the Bidens, then you are aiming way to low on what is really wrong and what is really broken here in the US.

There's a difference between getting elected as W did and appointed as Bobby Kennedy did.
