Last I checked, if I organized a car road race on a public road every single car would get impounded, the drivers would get arrested, and the people watching would get a $500 fine.

Funny how that works.

A cyclist will get a speeding ticket as well.

I think it's really you that has the entitlement issues.

I am all for cyclists, I even leave extra room for bikers. I think many of the cyclists though act as if they are ENTITLED to slow others down and not allow them to pass. At the same time I see many electing to cut to the sidewalk/crosswalk to avoid having to stop for signals nor pedestrians.

It's like the guy in his SUV that thinks if someone doesn't yield for him, he will just run them down. The cyclist gets a 'let them hit me' attitude.

Like gsellis stated though the real cyclists just pull a track stand and are usually faster off the line than the cars behind them. They stay to the right and don't weave in and out of the path/side of the road. I used to track stand on my Marin in Gainesville...which is VERY bike friendly but still you get the asshats coming into the bike lane trying to clip you.

When have I EVER posted anything that would lead you to believe that? You clearly don't know a thing about me so please save your ridiculous assumptions for someone else.

The only entitlement I think I'm due is that motorists treat me with some respect and try not to kill me when I ride. I don't think that's asking too much.

BTW-I don't track stand but I am quick to clip in and I am usually through an intersection before most cars. I also obey traffic laws and I ride in bike lanes when on roads that have them.

It also makes bicycling more appealing, meaning maybe there will be less cars to deal with on the road. You know, cars, those things we ride in to talk on our cell phones.

I don't find that traffic lights slow me down all that much on my commute. Sometimes I'll hit only one or two red and sometimes I'll hit 6 or 7 red lights. It might make a difference of about 2-3 minutes on a 10 mile ride. No big deal quite frankly.

So do I. Quite normal. If you set the clip tension right and have been using them for years it's no problem clipping in and shooting off.

So do most cyclists who use clips. What's your point?

I don't know why you quoted that. It was merely to make a point about how stupid the OP sounded when he stated that cyclists are self-entitled blah blah blah. Might want to check the batteries in your sarcasm meter. :p

Correct. Not everyone can perform a trackstand for the whole length of red light nor have the room to perform one at a red light.

Clipping in and out is second nature to me.

Me too. Unclip left, feeble stand for about 10 seconds, foot down... :D Of course, I am not a roadie and riding my FS Mountain, so a bit higher in the air.

It doesn't really matter if it makes much of a difference... the psychological appeal of being able to go through one is enough to entice many people.

I got into a shouting match with some jackass a few months ago who buzzed me and when I threw up a hand in disgust he slows and starts confronting me. Shouting at me, the asshole even took a swing at me even though he was the one who was in the wrong. I called the cops on his ignorant ass.

/rant

run a red light in front of my truck. ill point and laff as you bounce off my windshield. call a cop too, he will make sure you are ok before giving you the ticket.

I don't run red lights on my bike. My point is that anyone who labels all cyclists the same is an idiot.

Oh the irony.

Anyone who labels all car/truck/SUV Drivers the same is an idiot.

Just LOL.

na he's right, bikes cause havoc, they increase the level of stress for all drivers around them and its quite stressful driving in cities anyways.

I come across asshole/idiotic cyclists fairly often. Usually they are nothing more than an annoyance and a danger to themselves if anything.

Its the idiot drivers that I share the road with that increase my stress level.

A question to the cyclists here. Most of our roads have virtually no shoulder. I can't count the number of times I have seen people riding their bikes on the shoulder with the mirrors of vehicles flying by them at 45mph within a foot or so of the biker. Yet, there is a completely empty sidewalk right next to them. Is there some sort of law that says they can't use the sidewalk? It doesn't bother me much but if I was on the bike I would be pretty darned concerned that some idiot driving behind me swerves a mere foot and clips me at 45-50mph.

Then they aren't really cyclists and no matter how fast you think you are...your holding up people by not just sprinting off.

How much room do you need to do a trackstand? I am not sure if we are talking the same thing.

Once you are in one, it's usually easy to hold barring gale force wind.

Either way unclipping negates the conservation of motion by some others above.

I am thinking many are really just 'bike riders' but not cyclists. The difference is about the same as someone with a MySpace site saying they are a web developer.

It's usually the non-cyclists that piss off drivers though and think in terms of 'let him hit me and I will sue'. A real cyclist has probably seen a friend or two get clipped or run into a car.

At UF I went straight over my bars when a little car pulled out in front of me (stuck their nose out at a stop sign into oncoming traffic)...I tried to stop but skidded hit the front tire and then landed on her hood and slid to the other side.

She got out of the car and started bitching at me..."LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO MY HOOD ASSHOLE!" I told her I was ok and if she'd like we could call the police and see about getting an ambulance here for my 'neck and back'. She swore at me some more and took off. I got her tag though just in case I had any problems. My bike was ok surprisingly...I thought I had screwed my wheel but it folded in and just had a little fork rash from her fender.

Flat out on a bike you can pick up major speed esp on downhills.

Wow. You have posted some idiotic things but this takes the cake. If one can't do a trackstand, they are not cyclist. LOL. You have to be kidding right?

You obviously have never ridden your bike in a city where a red light could last minutes and you have other cyclist standing a foot next to you or behind you. You have pedestrians all around you. Not all streets have bike lanes. LMAO. You are a joke beyond belief.

I have mountain bike raced semi-professional in the past and I'm not a cyclist b/c I don't perform a track stand at a red light. LMAO. Do you know I can clip into my pedal and get across an intersection before a car is half-way across.

Seriously, stop posting in threads that you don't have a friggen clue and make such stupid statements. You're either very ignorant or just a troll. Or your inability to be a 'real cyclist' and avoid a car gave you brain damage.

Seems like it'd be a simple issue of the law of superior tonnage. Car vs bike. The car's gonna win every single time.

In Tokyo they have very wide sidewalks, and everyone rides their bikes on them.

Of course, they use single-speeds with a 50-year-old design, so they aren't going nearly as fast as American cyclists. It still seemed like a better system than over here.

what is mountain bike raced? Now that is a funny freaking statement. Add in semi-professional and that's pure comedy. I am interested to hear more on what class, type of mountain bike race, etc it was...

My point on the track stand, like in most bike races (but not all); is the way to stay on your bike and get the best take off. If you aren't doing this, then like some that have stated they aren't holding up traffic....they are.

I am usually half way through an intersection before the cars will start passing me. The guys that have put one or two feet down are still starting off with the cars.

The whole jist of this story is on a bike on the road you follow the road rules and try not to be a pest to faster traffic.

I unclip my right foot at traffic lights and with one half revolution on my left foot I can pause for a half a second, if that, while I clip the right foot in and not even lose momentum. It is second nature and takes almost no time at all.

XC Semi-Pro/Expert Class, Fat Chance YoEddy for fast courses and a Proflex 957 for more technical races. Me at the Hillsboro Classic

How about a pic of you doing a track stand?

Have you ever heard of timing your start? I'm clipped in riding before most people that are track standing can straighten out their front tire and go. Do you even know how to track stand?

And what is 'jist'? Now, that is freaking funny.

Honestly, stop posting on topics you have zero clue about. You're stupid enough to believe that people that don't track stand at red lights are not cyclist. You're stupid enough to believe that people that don't have one foot clipped at a red light aren't timing the light and can clip-in while making their first pedal stroke at the same time. Have you ever even used clipless pedals?

The more you post, the more clueless you sound. Seriously, move on, you've been pwn'd enough.

And people drive everyday too, doesn't make them 'drivers' in the sense of motorsports.

There are many dudes that do weekend runs, have all the pretty gear, etc but really aren't cyclists...they are just bike riders.

Maybe you have mad skillz like capt caveman...most people cannot get clipped in quickly...most people would probably do better with clipless pedals instead of fighting with them in traffic.

Again too much of this you and that other guy are taking personally when I was referring to those that do stupid things like make up their own traffic rules, don't yield to cars wanting to pass, etc.
