I swear to ****** god, one of my goals in life is to cripple one of these assholes that thinks they don't have to share the road. These fuckers think they can intimidate cyclists and endanger us on a daily basis.

I got into a shouting match with some jackass a few months ago who buzzed me and when I threw up a hand in disgust he slows and starts confronting me. Shouting at me, the asshole even took a swing at me even though he was the one who was in the wrong. I called the cops on his ignorant ass.

run a red light in front of my truck. ill point and laff as you bounce off my windshield. call a cop too, he will make sure you are ok before giving you the ticket.

I don't run red lights on my bike. My point is that anyone who labels all cyclists the same is an idiot.

What about terming all people in cars as "cagers"?

What's wrong with calling people in cars cagers? You're driving around in what is essentially just a metal cage on wheels. It's actually a fairly accurate term.

BTW-I'm a cager today because of all the smoke here. I'm an enlightened cager though. :p

nope, not accurate. it is a vehicle. not a cage. you may see it as a cage, but it is not. i refuse to call cyclists "bikers", its an insult to bikers. cyclist is not a derogatory name, but assuming all people in a car are in a cage is. we are drivers. we drive cars, not cages. seems you need to take a bit of your own advice and stop generalizing.

edit: wow, i need to stop working so much and pay attention, i quoted the same post and didnt read the same thing twice... =P

I got into a shouting match at 2nd and Brannon about 30 minutes ago- the light turned green and I took off, and a bicyclist entered the intersection and fell to the ground in an attempt to avoid my car. I had 100% right of way. Somehow it is my fault the mother ****** ran the red light - they just don't feel they need to stop.

The city here does not enforce red light rules against bicyclists at all. Therefore, it seems, they do not think the have any reason to stop. At any red light. Ever. One of them got mowed down by a cement truck onto turning onto 101 last month. What the hell do you expect, you choose to not stop at red lights, you get killed, and it's the city's fault for not protecting your ass? Now we can't turn right at Market and Octavia because your worthless ass thinks you don't need to stop. And it's a perfectly useful intersection - the reason why we can't turn is simply because you complained to the city. And guess what? I think a few more got hit since the cement truck incident - for not stopping.

install brush guard and proceed to run them over

i agree. im one of the guys that tries to give as much room to cyclists as possible. but if you mess up and i hit ya, be prepared to take that responsibility, not me. if i could have stopped and didnt i would have to deal with that, but if i cant stop in time, dont get up (if you can) and think you an accost me for your shortcomings.

Ooh, internet tough guy...

I see bikers up here in Seattle run red lights all the time. I've seen them go straight from the inside of a "Turn Only" lane. I've seen them riding on the sidewalk (illegal here) and be shocked that a car would dare pull over the sidewalk (not into the road) before turning to see if traffic was clear.

To be fair, the vast, vast majority of cyclists obey the rules of the road, and they have to put up with a LOT of idiots in cars, but the few morons who refuse to obey traffic laws are really giving the rest of cyclists a bad name.

ZV

The idiots who run lights are just that, idiots. A real cyclist would see it as an opportunity to practice their track stand (stopped, in the pedals, upright, balanced - a racing technique that even mountain bikers practice for setup.)

Me, I hate it when those damn cars run the stop signs (almost hit by a Korean lady who missed the 3-way - Stoppie for the win).

Ah, cool. Well, I'm a runner and I call all cyclists "taints" on account of they are balancing themselves on their taints and wear pads there for comfort.

..the solution is easy. License and register them and require plates to be displayed. Euro-socialist europe..china and japan do it. So can we. Then group morons like crittal mass can be held responsible for the vandalism and movement infractions they are so famous for.

I think it's really you that has the entitlement issues.

I am all for cyclists, I even leave extra room for bikers. I think many of the cyclists though act as if they are ENTITLED to slow others down and not allow them to pass. At the same time I see many electing to cut to the sidewalk/crosswalk to avoid having to stop for signals nor pedestrians.

It's like the guy in his SUV that thinks if someone doesn't yield for him, he will just run them down. The cyclist gets a 'let them hit me' attitude.

Like gsellis stated though the real cyclists just pull a track stand and are usually faster off the line than the cars behind them. They stay to the right and don't weave in and out of the path/side of the road. I used to track stand on my Marin in Gainesville...which is VERY bike friendly but still you get the asshats coming into the bike lane trying to clip you.

Bicycles [in Japan] are registered in order to prevent theft and aid in retrieving them when they are lost or stolen.

So in Japan it is not required and NOT for licensing purposes.

In the past, China required bike registration with the transportation department, parts inspection, ownership papers from the police and even a license plate! Shockingly, no one bothered because... it's a bike.

In China this was the case, but the important point is, no one bothered. A system in line with the Japanese registration came into effect yesterday, applies only to new bicycles and is again primarily for theft prevention.

I still have no idea which part of Europe uses bike licenses and if it does I have broken the law plenty of times.

Let me say this. I am from South Carolina. We have bicyclists and they respect the laws for riding on the road. Never had any trouble with it here.

Last month I was out in SF for business. I had never been to SF before. You aren't kidding with those bicyclists. Those fvckers are ballsy. They aren't the only ones either. Motorcyclists were just as brazen.

On top of that they are a nuisance and danger to themselves and car\truck drivers as they never go the speed limit and often dont follow the rules of the road either.

Just LOL.

na he's right, bikes cause havoc, they increase the level of stress for all drivers around them and its quite stressful driving in cities anyways.

I'm kind of blunt, I know, but all I have to say about that is "boo-frickin-hoo".

Get off the god damn cell-phone and drive (not directing that at you, really). It's not stressful or difficult to operate a motor vehicle if you're properly doing so, and have the proper education, common sense and/or experience. If you're competent, it should be of little to no consequence to you as a motorist to have to share the roadways with a bike.

Driving is easy if taken seriously. If you're having a hard time with it, I honestly believe you aren't trying hard enough, or quite possibly need some kind of medical assistance. Being old, young, or even mildly stupid should not make driving with bikes on the road a complicated and havoc ridden experience. You'd have to be a serious down-syndrome case to not be able to DO THIS EASILY.

I'm amazed that people still bitch about bikers. They're far less prone to being idiotic than drivers of motor vehicles are. They're more vulnerable, and FEEL that vulnerability and act accordingly. The same mental capabilities I've talked about go for bikers, too. If you're not capable of simple common sense and safety, get off the damn road and stay in your house, get medical attention, and figure that damn shit out before trying again. OH EM GEE.

Truer words were never spoken. :)

Though I did have a pedestrian come very close to committing a darwin award in front of me the other day. I was driving along a city street (35mph marked) at about 30mph a couple carlengths back from the car in front of me. I was in the middle of a block (i.e. no crosswalk) when a man standing on the curb about 10 feet in front of me looks directly at me and proceeds to step into the street. Full braking, hand on the horn immediately, and the guy jumps back looking surprised.

Scared the sh*t out of me and I am beyond thankful that he jumped back out of the way because there was no way I could have stopped in time (I came to a stop about 30 feet past him). I really don't care whose "fault" it is, I really have no desire to run anyone over. I just don't need that kind of psychological trauma.

People everywhere, no matter whether they are riding, driving, or walking, need to pay attention to what's going on around them and obey all the laws for traffic control. That's really the foundation of this all.

It's in the interests of pretty much everyone to permit a bicycle rider to ride through a red light after stopping and checking to make sure it's clear. As a car driver, I'd much rather the bicycle be well ahead of me when I start going again so I don't have to wait 10 seconds for it to gather momentum. It also makes bicycling more appealing, meaning maybe there will be less cars to deal with on the road. You know, cars, those things we ride in to talk on our cell phones.

it usually makes them fall down. i had a 145db triple air horn on my montego back in the day, used to do this all the time. bad part is, sometimes they fall into traffic. not the safest or best way to go about it. but ive also kicked the crap out of plenty of asswipe bicyclists here in AZ. dont lean your face into a vehicle to tell them how close they came to killing you unless you want a fist or a 9mm barrel in your mouth.

ETHUGIN4LIFE!

Ahh one of those assholes with the airhorn to make up for his little wiener. Those chicks finally giving you attention over the horn were not impressed.

Pull a gun on most cyclists you better be ready to use it. Most of them I knew also did a ton of fitness and self defense training.

Those saying bikes should just blow traffic signs aren't probably real cyclists. You hit a pedestrian on a bike, you are both going to be screwed. You not see the asshole in the cross traffic approaching at 3x the speed limit, he is not going to even notice you bouncing off his hood.

Why Mexicans and nobody else? Because most everyone else has a sense of danger of getting busted and having their lives ruined because they have identities, addresses, social security numbers, etc. Mexicans with stolen or anonymous identities and nothing to lose can just disappear and run to Mexico to evade responsibility for their destructive lifestyles, and they all like to cover and lie for each other.

I've lost count of the times I've found myself standing in line at Autozone waiting to buy a case of oil or a filter and there is a drunk or stoned Mexican in the line and you can smell the Bud Light the moment you walk in the door.
