I was taking off my rear tire, then something strange happened. All the gears fell off!

I managed to stack them all back on in the right order, correctly in place. But the last piece, some round O-ring that acts as a nut of sorts wont stay on. I can ride for about 2 minutes before it just falls out again. Any tool I need to use to put this back on?

You need a chain whip or a freewheel socket. It would be cheaper to bring it into a bike shop and let them tighten it for you than to buy the tool to use just one time.

cassette tools

Edit: for a brain fart and clarification

Just bring the rear wheel to a bike shop. They shouldn't charge you more than $10.00 to tighten it, if you don't need any new parts.

What you have there is a cassette type hub that use's a different type of gear cluster than a spin on freewheel.
Probably just a few dollars o have a shop tighten for you.

That's the lock ring, and you need a freewheel tool to tighten on properly.

You only need a chain whip to take them off.

Update: Lock ring lost all its threads, so that was a loss. But then, on another post, I think Brutus pointed out the freewheel might be going bad. They took it apart at the store, and guess what, it was broke. So new freewheel and gears and installlation $25.

It rides nice and smooth now.
