I just got Specialized Expedition sport And i love it.

Since i got it on sale i got for under $300. Well worth the money. Best bike i have ever owned!

If you pay for Specialized or Trek, you'll be paying a bit extra for brands that advertise extensively. You may want to check out Kona and I would recommend staying away from front suspension. If you want a bicycle to get you where you're going, suspension is really overkill on anything short of a real mountain biking trail. If you really plan on off-roading a lot and cannot afford a separate mountain bike, look more into cyclecross bicycles than hybrids. Hybrids are what old men and women ride in fully upright positions as they weave side to side down the sidewalk at 5 mph.

I would NOT get any sort of suspension. If you are going to be on pavement most of the time and only on light dirt there is absolutly no need for suspension. Go to a bike shop and look at bikes that cost around $400 (w/o shocks).

Most of the bikes in that price range are ment for teenagers who trash their bikes. But honestly, it will be perfect for you. A sturdy frame, easy access parts, may be a bit heavy, but it will go anywhere you want it to.

You could look into a cyclocross bike, it's mainly built like a road bike, but includes thicker tires for lite off-road stuff. I've seen people doing mtb races on them, but I wouldn't.

Don't bother with suspension. And don't buy a hybrid, simply because they look so dorky! They really are more for old people.

Don't get a cyclocross or road bike. You'll regret it when you go off a curb and bend the rim.

IMO, the best choice is a MT bike with semi slick tires. If planetary gear hubs were cheap I'd suggest one of those instead of a messy, fragile, high maintenance derailleur.
