I have this bike that I use for road riding.

Mongoose Switchback CX 1998

I'd like to replace the stock 1.95" tires with something faster. I think that 1.5" is the thinnest I can go.

Any suggestions on what tires to get?

I don't think you'd want completely slick tires unless you are going to keep to very dry smooth road--you hit a little patch of water/wet grass/mud and you're toast with slicks.

What type of characteristics are you looking for? Speed or comfort?

Specialized makes good tires, I recommend a set with the Armadillo flat protection.

For lower rolling resistance/higher speed tires, go for the Nimbus Amradillo.
For comfort, check the Hemisphere Armadillo tires.

I use these

Although they're not ideal for it, I've ridden them across grass, down gravel paths, through puddles, etc, and I haven't crashed, and they're really fast on pavement.

If you want to stick with 1.95s and have more of a "compromise tire" that will not be completely helpless in grass/gravel - you can go with these:

Kenda Cross

I use them on my "comfort bike" (2003 Raleigh SC40) for paved trails and gravel campground roads.

Thanks. Those tires are pretty similar to what I'm using now.

I have the kid carrier on my bike too.

Now that my kids are old enough to ride with me, I'm thinking about getting this:

Trek 7300 FX.

I was hoping that with faster tires I might be able to hold off on the purchase though.
