You don't HAVE to shave the legs....it's just one of those things that most of us do. Unless you're racing (read: cleaning up road rash on hairy legs is a biotch, trust me), there's really no reason for it.

This is really only true if your bike isn't fitted properly. Numbness while riding is NOT normal, trust me. If you're experiencing this, you need to make some adjustments to your setup and saddle height.

No they are no special at all. You problem is that you need to get a Top swing derailleur. They have the mount lower down compared to the bottom swing.

About 18 pounds. Not too shabby for a crappy steel bike eh?

Considering the legal minimum weight for a ICU race bike is 6.8kg (~15lbs), no it is very light.

There is a local frame builder here in Tucson (Gilmore, not sure about the spelling) who makes mainly steel road bikes.
Ever heard of him?

actually around 23 off my own digital scale. the aluminum frame does make a difference but the components aren't exactly top of the line, but I guess that's the best I can afford for now.

The high-end components are not that much lighter. Save weight on tubes+tires and maybe a light handlebar + seatpost.

Fausto1, in reference to the above quote...while on long rides how often/how much time do you spend riding out of the saddle?...How much of a factor do you feel seat style plays into numbness? (ie: should I keep buying seats untill I get to one where numbness isn't a factor? how long should I wait (break-in the saddle) before trying the next one?)
