Bicycle enthusiasts - help me choose a good handlebar cargo bag

After successfully dieting (low-carb) and excercising my way down 40lbs, I have started bike riding again. I want to use my bike for quick trips to the store and on camping trips, so i will need some space to carry light cargo. I have installed a child seat on the back for my 3 y.o. son (he loves it!) so that rules out a rear rack/pack. The best alternative I have found is a handlebar bag. I prefer it be one with a quick-disconnect and handle/shoulderstrap for ease of carrying when it is off the bike. Here are two I found that I like by TOPEAK:

Tour Guide handlebar bag
Tour Guide DX handlebar bag

I found a seller on eBay that has them for $41 and $48 shipped respectively. I would like input from cyclists - go for the larger one? Do you use handlebar bags (pros/cons)? Do you know of other better/cheaper models available that also have quick-disconnect and a means of carrying? Any better options than a handlebar bag (keeping in mind the child seat on the back)?

Thanks for any input!

congrats on losing the weight! 😀

dont think i could be much help in here since i dont use handlebar bags... i find them a bit too big and cumbersome... 🙁 ...i like Topeak though. 😛

i use smaller saddle bags or hydration packs with pockets for extra tubes... pumps... and whatever else i bring along. 🙂 ride safe!

Thanks for the input.

Brutuskend - I looked at some of the Jandd handlebar bags and i have to agree. The seem to cost more and offer less volume.

I will probably order a Topeak later this evening unless someone else has another suggestion or online bicycle retailer to suggest. It is just hard to swallow spending close to $50 for a bag to put on a cheap bike that only cost me $99 a few years ago 🙂

OT: I remember as a kid on my little bike having the one that drapes to either side of the rear wheel. Not sure why a kid who never rides more than a mile away needed it, but I did!
