Group Protests Islam Outside Tampa Mosque

TBO.com
More than 20 people from a "biblical group" gathered Saturday outside the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay Area, 7326 E. Sligh Ave., with signs and a bullhorn to denounce the religion of Islam.

Members of the group engaged in a "spirited debate" with Muslims inside the mosque, but the encounter was peaceful, according to officers with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The demonstration, which began around 12:30 p.m., ended about 30 minutes later.

Video footage, with annoying editing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPZxsuRlvh4

The asshat on the megaphone sounds like the same asshat that is always at USF in front of an outdoor area with a Subway, yelling "YOU'RE A WHORE" at random girls in FL attire (shorts), and the target of..."fun" from drunk frat boys.

The religious right in FL is annoying. Evangelicals here rarely do anything productive, rather than participate in several interfaith dialogues I've been to, where Unitatirians, Lutherans, etc. regularly participate, the only activities I've seen them partake in are inflammatory, like yelling from a megaphone at a Masjid or yelling from a megaphone telling college students they've got a one way ticket to hellfire.

FL is annoying period.

I see no problem with this. Protesting Islam is a good idea. Then again, so is protesting Christianity.

I take it you're atheist/agnostic/against organized religion? That's perfectly fine, I say PO-TA-TO you say potato.

If the situation were reversed and Muslims were disturbing daily services at a Church, I think the reaction would've been different or far more severe.

Exactly. You think your god is correct, so do Christians. You say PO-TA-TO, they say potato.

You guys can protest the hell out of each other for all I care, as long as it is peaceful.

Except I haven't seen ANYONE but an Evangelical Christian disturb others at their place of worship, or use "YOU'RE GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL" to get them to convert. Self hindering behavior FTL.

Jehovah's Witnesses come to my door with a smile and some spam.
Jews don't really promote conversion anyways.
Muslims usually set up "Da'wah" events, open houses, etc.
Other denominations of Christianity usually do something similar.

What about that group of Muslims that wants to kill all the "infidels", and "push the jews back into the sea?" They are by far the most out of control sect of a religion in the world. Or are we just talking USA here?

A peaceful assembly/protest is an American constitutional right. I may think it is distasteful and short-sighted, but it isnt really my business.

I would find that annoying too. I think all religion is equally bunk, but don't feel the need to go in front of a Church, Temple, Mosque, or other facility and be an ass about it. Most Christians are fine and even most Evangelicals, but there's still that wing that's just a little too Self-Righteous and a whole lot Assholes-for-Christ in their belief.

C'mon, it wasn't that long ago a group of pro-gay marriage people in drag invaded a church service (Catholic IIRC) in San fransico causing a rucus.

Religious taunting:

My God is red hot - Your God ain't doodley-squat

"My God p'wns your God"

"2-4-6-8. Our God is real-yours is fake!"

"Time to turn so you don't burn!"

"We eat pork. We eat pork. We eat pork ..."

Sounds like Brother Micah.

He goes around the South "preaching". Attention whore to the max. He avoids both the Christians and non-Christians questions about his viewpoints, and out right makes an ass of himself. I've heard that he tries to get people to assault him so he can sue. I've seen people get close to it at Alabama. Can't really blame them. :shrug;

A minor clarification.

In this regard, Evangelicals are indiscriminate. They chant "you're going to hell" to any non-evangelical. I'm a catholic, and they particularly dislike me.

They worship the bible, not God.

I dunno. I find they tend to take particular offense with a capital O to the vatican. I think they see it as more of a threat than atheism.

Too many of them in FL, IMO.

:Q THAT'S THE ASSHOLE I SEE ON CAMPUS (USF - Tampa)!!! I RECOGNIZE HIS STUPID BERET AND SUSPENDERS ANYWHERE.

IIRC, he or one of his cronies actually DID get assaulted at USF, and he did NOT win when he sued because the assailant was provoked.

EDIT: Roommate confirmed story. He called some girl a whore (as usual). Her boyfriend was right next to her, and he tackled him. Said boyfriend is a rugby player.

All you can do is laugh at those clowns. Seriously, are they trying to convert people by calling Mohammed a pedophile?

This goes for any belief however, Everyone has a deity whether Allah, God, Jehovah, Shiva, Bill Gates, themselves or the Almighty dollar (not so Almighty anymore, maybe the Euro and yuan)

Whatever your deity is you should be left alone in peace to practice it

20 people...30 minute demonstration. Now let's extrapolate this into a representation of the religious right in FL (approximately 30%-35% of 18,000,000 people)...nice! Never underestimate a human being's ability to stereotype and rationalize their bigotry. Isn't it odd that many times the very thing people despise the most is the very thing they become?

majority of the people posting who live in the area seem to be disgusted by what happened.

like I said the minority make the majority look horrible

Yeah you're right, let's paint them instead with the brush of their own choosing:

The Experience in Orlando - Yeah Baby

That's the religious right in FL, Disney style.

What exactly are they protesting in front of a mosque? What does this achieve really? They want to fight? Sure go ahead and start one and lets see what happens. People should respect other people privates. Shouldn't we all just respect each others beliefs, whatever they are? In a CIVILIZED society.
