BH-5 is back! From OCZ

I've been eyeing those sticks to work with my good old BH-5 (512MB dual channel) to get 1.5GB total. Hopefully they behave much the same with voltage, and as Zebo said somewhere, 2T in dual channel won't be too painful.

OCZ's website says they can ran 3.5v in normal conditions (!) My question is, anybody remember what's the highest voltage those old BH-5 can sustain? The last thing in the world I want is to fry those 2-2-2 chips. Also, at which voltage level should do I HAVE to use a fan over them?

if it's the old bh5 i wouldn't push it over 3.7v-3.8v.. and have sh!t load of air blowing of them..
and the new utt/bh5, i wouldn't go over 3.6v-3.7v....

I have a game that'll push 770MB including windows processes. If I try to run some other stuff 1GB is definately not going to be enough.

With all this talk about 2GB just for BF2, you'd definately need 2GB if you're planning on playing newer games like that AND multi tasking. Then there was the Doom3 memory review that showed that Doom 3 would use up to 1.5GB of ram if it was there.

However this memory still is tempting as with single core I still don't "need" more than 1GB and I'm not playing any newer games these days because I've recently gotten back into some old online classics where I'd be perfectly fine with just 512MB.

Thanks a million krnxpride. Those numbers are WAY higher than what I thought. Gee, 3.7v, I will take your word for it. Is there any thing (software probe, etc) that can warn me before I do irreversable damage on the RAM? I think I'm gonna only try 3.4-3.5v, but who knows, one day i get greedier and want to squeeze the last drop of juice ...

Speaking of voltage-hungry RAMs, do BH-5 and the new VX chips (OCZ Gold vs. VX/Mushkin redline, I believe they are UTT CH-5) behave differently? CAn I mix them and just treat them the same (keep feeding more voltage)?

By the way, your rig is almost exactly the setup I'm planning 😉

not playing BF2 apparently, not that I blame you. That game does kinda requre 1GB+.

I have this same question!!

their are 3 type of ic's here, original bh-5, new bh5 dye utt and ch-5 dye utt, bh-5 and new bh-5 can mix, mushkin has some dual channel packages with one of each, you might run into problems mixing ch-5 utt and bh-5 but they both love the voltage

Wich one of these is the "new BH-5":

OCZ Gold Series 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail

The link in the first page points to the first one (Gold) but the second one is rated to run at 3.2 volts and also has VX in the model name, so it seems more likely UTT to me then the first one!

ocz pc3200/pc4000 value/gold vx is ch dye utt

mushkin blue c2's (990992) can be bh-5, bh dye or ch dye utt
redline should be ch dye utt

the 2nd one could be either bh or ch dye, my utt has 2-3-3 timings at stock and 2-2-2 around 3.1-3.2 volts

Ok, I have been reading for an hour now, and most of my question have solved out... all the VX line is CH-UTT as you have said, and the first memory (Gold) is BH-UTT... now the question is: what is better, a 4000VX covered 3.5 volts +5% or a 3200 BH-UTT covered at 3.1 volts +5% ???

the gold vx ch 5 hits 2-2-2@2.8@200

at 3.3volts it hits 250-2-2-2

mine does low 240's at 2-2-2@3.3 volts
but requires 3.0-3.1 volts to do 200-2-2-2

seems like the ch dye is better

Blah i'm still hugging my BH-5 twinmos speed premiums which I got for 100 dollars shipped.... I regret not buying more.... I get around 242-243 2-2-2-5 with 3.2 volts 🙂. I still haven't burned them in either! I'm too afraid to go above 3.3 to burn them in at higher volts heh.

ok but the gold you are talking about is the 4000 VX, so it's a very hand-picked one, maybe we should compare the pc3200 VX with the PC3200 gold (wich uses BH-UTT) to make a more fair comparation.

A bit old, but what can I push the vdimm on this ram to without any active cooling on it? (Other than the little bit it's getting from the xp-90 hovering above it).
