I've seen people (and shortylickens) talking about BG/2 and how fun it is and would like to try it out. Is it a diabloesque game series or what would you compare it to?

Secondly, where can i get it/them the cheapest?

Thanks,

Slag

Baldur's Gate are old school AD&D. Gameplay wise, it's equivalent to Neverwinter Nights 2, Planescape, Icewind Dale.

Buy.com seems to have the BG2 collection available new for $25 or so. Not bad for an out of print game from a reputable seller.

Exact opposite, hardcore AD&D. Random encounters and simple battles don't require much thought, but in BG2 especially the boss battles sometimes require as much tactical thinking as a wargame. You'll need to plan ahead the "load out" of your spellcasters including what trigger and sequencer chains to have memorized.

GoGamer.com sometimes has BG1 / 2 and AD&D collections at reasonable prices.

If you want diabloesque look into Titan Quest Gold and Torchlight.

Baldurs Gate II + TOB and Diablo II are my two favorite PC RPGs. Ever.

One I spent playing through the single player with countless different main characters from Good ones, evil ones, Magic users, dual Katana wielding crazy dudes, Sorcs, rangers, druids, clerics...

The other I spent playing hundreds of hours of in High School on Battle.net creating tons of characters and getting "rich", crafting the perfect bow or armour, doing cow runs with friends, and PVP was awesome.

Baldur's Gate is arguably the best computer RPG ever made. It's a work of art. It is, however, NOT at all like Diablo aside from they're both fantasy games. Baldur's Gate is HEAVILY story driven and DEEPLY based in D&D rules. Diablo is a pretty simple clickfest/hack-n-slash game with little story.

this.

BG will take a little to get into. i actually never beat BG1, but i've beaten BG2 + Xpac countless times. At least 10.

If you are new to D&D, I'd suggest playing a tutorial to familiarize yourself with how things work. It's very different than Diablo.

Playing BG1 before BG2 isn't *absolutely* necessary, but it will certainly help with the story, characters, and game mechanics. If you jump straight to BG2, my advice is this - make sure you get out of the first dungeon, and put a few hours in, before deciding to quit if you're not feeling it. The game picks up soooo much after you get out.

and it's fcking hard. like really, ridiculously hard, often requiring not only impeccable strategy but also a bit of luck with some enemies that can 1-hit kill you or lay waste to your whole team with a few spells. you often have to resort to meta-gaming tricks e.g. encounter a boss, die from it but know the counter to use, then reload and try again with the proper spells/buffs.

^ right, planning what spells to carry (and potions, weapons for others) based on knowing what you will be fighting in the boss battle, and what didn't work in your first few tries.

It can be very satisfying when you do finally come up with the right tactics and preparations to kill that dragon or group of mind flayers or whatever.

If that sounds frustrating, Neverwinter Nights 1-2 are less difficult and are in 3D.

There are also tons of modifications out for the game. one of my favorites is BGT (baldur's gate trilogy), which lets you play through Baldurs Gate 1, Baldur's Gate II, and Throne of Bhaal all in basically one playthrough. The best part about this is it lets you play BG1 on the BG2 engine, which is much improved and really makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. If you have lots of time to learn about the game, I'd totally recommend it. I've spent hundreds of hours not only playing the game, but reading about the lore, the characters, the walkthroughs, strategies, damage figures, etc etc etc. There's incredible amounts of info about this game and the scope is absolutely enormous.

Also, I recommend the big BG pack, but, if you can find it, I highly recommend the Forgotten Realms pack. I got it a long time ago and am so grateful.
It has BG1 and 2 on DVD, and also Icewind Dale 1 and 2, and Neverwinter Nights 1 (but its on CD, which is annoying).
It does NOT include Planescape or Temple of Elemental Evil, those were in other collections.

Besides which if you wanna play NWN, the best way is through the Diamond Edition, if you can find it.
