Having problems with my current video card. A Geforce 4 MX. I saw the BFG GeForce FX 5500 OC 256MB for close to the same price as the ATI 9600SE 128MB. I haven't heard much about the 5500's and can't seem to find any non-manufacture reviews. Any opinions on either the card or this matchup?

GeForce FX 5500 OC w/256MB from BFG Tech
ATI 9600SE w/128MB

Are you planning on playing games with either of these cards? Because they are pretty much the bottom of the barrel.

How much can you spend? Honestly, both BFG and ATI are good companies, but I wouldn't get either.

I know these aren't great, but I am running with a Gefroce 4MX right now and they both seem better than what I currently have. Next year, I can upgrade the whole system, this is just to keep things running. If these are the choices, does one DRASTICALLY outshine the other?

Okay. Let me rephrase. I have access to 3 FREE cards. A GeForce 3 MX 440, a GeForce FX 5500 OC or an ATI 9800 SE. I can get the later two practically free. (One used and one new, but discarded). These are my only three options at this time. Does anyone have USEFUL input? They suck doesn't help.

i assume the 9800SE is a typo and you ment a 9600SE. Out of all of those i would pick the (again i assume you ment geforce 4 mx440 rather than gf3) geforce 4.

Go with the 9800SE. Even though it's hampered with a 128-bit memory bus it'll still blow the socks off the other cards.:)

Sorry. I have a GeForce 4MX 440 and I can obtain an ATI 9600SE or a GeForce FX 5500 OC.
Here is what I know so far:
I am not sure how the pipes are figured AxB means how many pipes, A or B?

GeForce FX 5500 OC
256MB
8X/4X
4x1 pipes???? It is between 5200 and 5600 which are both 4x1
128 bit buswidth ??? Again, 5200 and 5600 have 128.
DX9
290 chipclock
350 memoryclock
NV 3X??? 5200 is NV34 and 5600 is NV31

ATI 9600SE:
128MB
8X/4X
4x1 pipes
64 bit buswidth
DX9
325 chipclock
365 memoryclock
ATI RV350 is chipset

GeForce 4 Mx 440:
64MB
4X/2X
2x2 pipes
128 bit buswidth
DX7
270 chipclock
400 memory clock
NV 17 is chipset
