No go, so I left it up to Rivatuner again. Tried installing old video drivers, and then the bios, no go. Poop : (

I would try to download/unzip them again, and contact BFG if necessary.

What OS are you using...?

Maybe you should uninstall the Graphics Drivers first, and then update the BIOS...?

Windows XP Home. I wasted too much time already messing with it. First I tried uninstalling the graphic driver, and tried updating the bios in safe mode. No go. Then I rebooted and tried updating the bios before the new drivers, no go. Then I installed the latest 169.21 drivers, and then tried the bios update. No go. So I re-installed them and tried again, no go. Then I reverted back to the old drivers and tried it all again, no go. So I am back to the latest drivers and Rivatuner and still the same old bios. But I guess if it's just an update for the fan control that I can stick with my fan speed profile with the same effect.

Well, I guess this seems like the only option for now.

I would still contact BFG though...

this update is pretty useless if you already use rivatuner and set your fanspeed on anything above 60%...

mine's set at 70-100% depending on my mood

How do you tolerate noisy/whining fans? Anything over 45% was annoying to my ears. :p

Mines set at 40-100% in 10% increments. It's noticable but not when wearing headphones. I will be using an aftermarket cooler soon.

With the new BIOS, my load temperatures are lower by about 10C, with the maximum being the low 80's, and the fan operating at around 2600RPM.

If BFG is comfortable with that, so am I. Noise is totally acceptable to me with the fan operating at around 50%.

I used to have the 7800GS, running Vista 64 RC1 in September 2006. Since Vista operates in 3D, the fan in that Card would always kick into high gear, not only while gaming! The noise was totally unbearable, so I had to come up with with the "makeshift" solution, since there was no aftermarket HSF that would fit the 7800GS.

I am waiting for my Ultimate 64, and really don't want to fiddle around with the VC fan while I am setting up my dual-boot system. I believe that this new BIOS resolves the issue.

I don't understand why it's necessary to reinstall the nVidia drivers if you upgrade the BIOS. Should the drivers get uninstalled, cleaned with a driver cleaner, and then reinstalled after the BIOS flash? Will Riva Tuner settings continue to override the BIOS settings?

I cant update both at the same time? Weak! More SLI-related hassle...

My cards have a sticker stating the BIOS version as 62.92.16.00.04.

BFG's update calls itself 62.92.00.18. Due to the difference in digits, it is hard to say which is newer. I ordered my cards well after becoming aware of the BIOS issue, so I expected them to have newer BIOSes, but I didn't expect them to be newer than the fix. I'm having crashes, so I'm just going to install this "update" and see how it goes.

Edit: The utility does not report the installed version, but it reports itself as 62.92.1F.00.18 (1F is hexadecimal for 16).

I had the same original bios version as you, the one on BFG website 62.92.00.18 is newer.

I tried this bios, and while it works, it ramps the fan speed too high for my liking. By the time the card reaches 85C, the fan seems to be spinning at about 70%, and that's just too loud. I didn't reinstall the drivers after the update, but I don't see why it would matter. I'll just stick with RivaTuner auto fan control - it's more flexible.

WARNING!

The BFG 8800 GT OC 512 card has problems with cooling due to a bios problem AND the fan itself can be defective!

BFGR88512GTOCE BIOS - Update Version: 62.92.00.18 Posting Date: 12/18/2007 File Size:272KB Description: Update the the thermal senor fan control to reduce the operating temperature of the GPU. This is recommended only for users with thermal- related concerns and an older BIOS version.

BFG Tech 8800 GT OC link: Go to SUPPORT for Bios Update!

On mine which I attempted to install today, the fan motor itself appears to be defective, and it feels like when turning by hand that something metallic in the fan motor is scraping something. It makes a horrible metal scraping sound when installed, too. It's amazing it did not burn up upon installing it. I just hope BB has another one in stock!

(Yes, I know I posted this in multiple threads, but it needed to be posted, me thinks.)

I had the same problem as yours, the OC sticker on the center of the fan dropped and fell inside the fan chamber and prevented the fan from spinning. Get some long nose pliers and take out that loose sticker.

Good Luck.
