Ok - I'm lining up to get 2 512MB 7800GTX's. First of all, I am not sure if I should get the BFG ( BFGR78512GTXOC ) with the faster core clock (580MHz) and memory clock (1750MHz) or the EVGA ( 512-P2-N545 ) 550MHz/ 1700MHz and then overclock myself.

BFG's warranty says no overclocking and EVGA says balls to the walls for their warranty (at least from what I've heard- never saw the actual warranty that says that.. plz post if you have the link for it as I could not find it). I would most likely try to push BFG further and void the warranty because that is just the way I am.. always want more. So... who votes what?

Also... I am having a hard time finding either of these so plz post if find them anywhere. Thanks!

were you expecting the warranty to include the words: we cover overclocking balls to the walls.

I think you pretty much answered your own question. If you don't care about warranty then just go with whatever card you can find. Evga's warranty is much better than BFGs though, it lifetime, you can use aftermarket cooling and oc as much as you want without voiding it, etc. Chances are that even though the BFG is clocked slighlty higher from the start, both of the cards will top out around the same area, something like 600/1800 if you're lucky (these 7800GTX512s are really pushing the core and PCB design of the 7800 series to their max)

This is consider easy to find when compared to finding the 6800Ultra a year and half ago.

BFG 7800GTX 512mb

Easy isnt it?

You can look into Mwave, tiger direct, ZZF etc. They all have them unless more hardcore enthusisats got to the cards before you did, i.e it could be out of stock. So many people are buying them at a price of 749 and up !! crazy indeed..

Wait a minute... Are you saying you're going to pay $1,500 for two graphics cards? I couldn't believe I dropped $399.99 + tax for my BFG 6800GT + free Doom3 earlier this year. I'm sorry but I have to say paying $750 for a video card is absolutely insane to me. What do you need all of that GPU power for?

Yeah, but considering a single 7800GTX 512 is so fast, isn't 2 of them just overkill? Could the CPU feed 2 of those cards fast enough to give the additional one a workout? To me (based on my income) paying $750 for a video card is insane but different people have different incomes and priorities so no biggie. Even if money was no object I can't imagine a 2nd $750 video card being "worth it" right now. One of the biggest bottlenecks in systems today is hard drive speed. I'd rather spend that $750 on a sweet SCSI card and SCSI had drive setup. I think there would be more value there. :)

I agree that todays HD's lack in speed but spending 750 on that stuff wouldnt be more value.

Personally I'd go for the BFG and not overclock. These things are already being pushed close to their limits as it is...

not too worried about hard drive speed... setting up the new system with 2 raptors raid 0... I did consider buying one 7800gtx now and one later but thought it would be easier now and it would last the longest without having to worry about new components for awhile

ok.. here is another question.. do card manufacturers have a way to tell if you overclock or not? Right now I see it as an honor system.. never really knew if they actually store additional information such as that on the card - anyone know?

I think it's a dead giveaway when you send them back a box of ash... :) J/K

AFAIK (not very far) overclocks are software controlled, so I dont think BFG will be able to toss the card in and say, oh look, this moron had this thing at 700/2000. I think the only way they could tell is if there are burn marks.
