BFG maybe special edition 6800s?

I picked up a 6800 GT for a buddy of mine at best buy yesterday and it has a TOTALLY different HSF than my evga referance cooler.

Its almost fully copper with one heat pipe and 2 fans, with built in blue LEDs and blue PCB. Is this a special edition or is it just that BFG changed their design? if you go to bfgtech.com they show the card on the 6800 page if you wanna see what I mean.
Card here

Anyone get a bfg before these designs or have they always been this way?

its not new. only BFG and Leadtech cards offer those coolers.
my BFG5900 came with one.

honestly? it aint so great, i replaced the cooler long ago.

it's actually a bit different. the 6800 is a heatpipe design; the 5900 was not. dunno if one is more effective than the other tho, personally i don't think the new one cools as well as the nv ref. cooler.

I am having some problems with my card and it has this new cooler, although I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I will probably have to replace it; should I try asking them for a card with the old style reference one instead?

i got one, i pulled the card and slapped arctic silver 3 on it.. im running @ ultra clocks right now. It can go higher too, but i havent tried...

How have your temps fared with the AS3 compared to the regular stuff? Might be a good idea for me to slap some AS3 on there...

another thread about this cooler with pics.

Hehe, I was about to link to my thread! Ya beat me too it. That other guy has much better pictures.

I honestly don't know if this copper cooler is any better than the reference design... some say it doesn't, some say it does.

Eh... whatever. It runs fine at Ultra speeds 🙂.
