I RMAed my dead card and they told me they'd email me when they got my card, informing me they were sending me whatever. However, the replacement card appeared on my doorstep today (UPS dropped it there, didn't even knock on my door).

Inside the box is a card in a plastic protection waffle, no documentation, nothing.

What bothers me is that the card I bought is a dual DVI card, and that's the reason I bought it. I already had a BFG 4600 DVI/VGA card, and the card I just got is also DVI/VGA. What is the nature of the card they sent me? Don't they make dual DVI cards anymore?

I haven't removed the card from the waffling and intend to call them tomorrow morning. I doubt they'd be open now. I liked my 6600 both for the dual DVI and the fact that the fan was very quiet. Even if this one is quiet, I'm not going to be happy with DVI/VGA.

Come on that was to be expected.

You should have made it clear you wanted a dual dvi card.

Gee, I don't know. They said they'd contact me. If they were going to send me something else, I could have reacted then. This sucks. They're going to hear from me.

edit: for the sake of adding to the discussion instead of just being an a-hole, i'll say this; just contact them and see if they can do anything for you.

Yup. I called them even though it's late. I was on hold 10 minutes and decided to do some more research and thinking before talking to them and I hung up. I'll call them in the morning. I think they're after hours now and on a skeleton crew.

I bought a second LCD monitor specifically so I could do dual monitor. When I discovered that the 2nd monitor looked lousy on VGA, I bought the 6600 dual DVI card. I didn't get it for anything other than so that I could have nice looking dual monitor -- I don't game. So I don't think it's unreasonable for me to ask them for another dual DVI card, even if I have to pay $10 again to ship them the card (I paid that a couple weeks ago to ship them my dead card).

My requirements are a decent performing dual DVI card that is quiet. The 6600 was just that.

I see the card they sent me must have 512 MB RAM and the one it replaced is 128 MB, I think. Is the tradeoff worth it? I really wanted dual DVI.

If you don't game then the 512MB is meaningless for you whereas Dual DVI should be higher on your priority list since you have dual monitors. Even it is arguable that gaming wise 512MB is wasted on a weak GPU like the 7600GS. I notice a major difference in text sharpness between VGA and DVI especially on slightly higher resolutions, I would stick to your original stance of wanting a replacement.

Thanks. Text sharpness is a major priority with me. I just got off the phone with an RMA rep, and they'll send me a dual DVI. She said the only dual DVI's they have in AGP are 6600's like the one that died. They don't have one right now but will send one to me when they get one (she said likely a week or two before they get one). Then I'll send the 7600GS back to them. They'll pay shipping, but I had to give them my CC number as collateral against returning the 7600GS. Well, this is better. Meantime, I'll leave the 7600GS in the plastic waffle, because I have a backup card. Don't want to risk something going wrong.

You know, I suspect that the 7600GS's fan is louder than the 6600's. I had BFG cards before (4200, and two 4600's) and they were pretty loud cards. I bought Zalman heatpipes (i.e. fanless) for both my 4600 cards. When I got the 6600 I was blown away by the fact that I couldn't hear it above the other stuff in my box. I was already looking around for a 3rd party quieter cooling solution, but didn't have to go that route. I think sticking with the 6600 is the best idea right now.

I can see now that next time I do a major upgrade, I'll be moving to PCI-E video and a Vista-capable mobo.
