BFG FX6800 Ultra 256MB OC Power Reqs.

BFG claims this card requires 480W. I've heard this card draws power like a beast, and has that monstrous cooling system, but how accurate is the requirement for a 480W power supply? I paid good money for an Antec 400W, not expecting to pick up this powerful a card, but a good deal just slapped me in the face, and I'm not sure if I can say no. Thoughts?

I would sell the Antec and buy a PSU that is more in line with the BFG card requirements just to be on the safe side. Yeah, sure others may say it will be okay, but better safe than sure. I think I saw someone post that if the PSU has at least 20A on the 12 volt rail you should be okay. But what if...

Good luck.

I'm currently running a 6800GT at 440/1160 on an Antec 380 watt PSU without any trouble. Ultra stock speed is 400/1100, so I would think 400 watts would be adequate.

It depends on whats in the rest of your system.

If you have one HD, one CDrom, on an Athlon-XP or Athlon-64 or P4C based system with 1GB of memory or less. Then youre probably fine with what you have.

If you have 2 HDs, 2 Roms, and your running an overclocked prescott, then probably not.

The 480w specification was actually set by nvidia, they did it to safeguard against people using 400w generic PSUs and frying the psu, or having stability problems. Antec is a good brand.

IIRC nVidia recommends a good quality 350W PSU for a 6800U. I've run a 6800U on a shared rail using a 400W PSU with no problems at all.

Ok folks, I've done some HW on voltage and whatnot, so maybe this updated info can help you help me or whatever.

I'm running an Antec SL400. The power output on the 12V rail is 140W or 11.666 Amps. According to this, the 6800 Ultra eats 5 Amps on the 12V rail. My Asus A8V-Deluxe mobo uses 8A on my 12V rail.

Is there anything else in my case draining power off the 12V rail? My case isn't all that complicated, with 2-80 mm fans, an Audigy 2 ZS, Raptor HD and a DVD-R.

The max my MOBO and a 6800U can draw is 13 Amps at 12V. The SL400 peaks at 11.666 Amps at 12V. Am I ok? Is there anything I left out?

my good friend is running a 6800GT, 2 raptors, plextor dvd burner, 2x512 pc3200, and pentium 3.2 in a shuttle w/ a 250 watt power supply so im guessing it should work
