I installed this card and at the same time re-installed everything, reformated, re-installed os.

Everything works great except when I play a game (Dark Age of Camelot) the whole system locks up. I have to reset the machine.

Upgraded from a radeon 64mb ddr vivo, any ideas on what the problem could be.

Im running win 98se
k-7master(msi 6341)
amd 1.2
256ddr
soundblaster live
wd 40gig
linksys NIC

you are probably missing some drivers somewhere.
the incorrect installation steps in installing the drivers can play a huge part in whether or not the system works at all.

Yeah, i was trying to make sure the drivers where right, its just strange that everything else runs great.

going to try and do a complete re-install using this order of drivers:

updated via 4-1
(minus agp)
restart
amd mini port driver
restart
direct x 8.1
restart
updated nvidia drivers
restart
sound drivers
restart
nic

does that look right?
Its been a while since I have done this, I can't remember if I was suppose to restart between agp-direct x-nividia drivers.

It could be your Powersupply not having enough juice, or your 5V line is low.
Cause i had the same problem when upgrading to a GF4 from a GF3. My 5 volt line was only 4.89 and it would reboot my PC everytime I starts a 3D game.

its a 300watt powersupply,

Im not exactly sure what you mean about the 5volt line, is there a simple way to check it? (a little clueless about that)

its an all online game, so it patches as you sign in.

I don't have any other games to try, I think I will try downloading a demo or 2 and try them.

Earlier today I played for over 2 hours with no problems, now right when I log in-----lock up.

thanks for the help so far, I don't really know what else to try and what else to look up.

Did you correctly remove all traces of your Radeon's drivers and software?

I think he answered that question with his first sentence in his first post...let me highlight the relevant part for you:

I installed this card and at the same time re-installed everything, reformated, re-installed os.

Now, as far as I know, reformatting the hd and a fresh install of the OS effectively removes all traces of anything.

Has anyone image quality problems with this card (2D, 3D, anytime)? I was getting lots of artifacts right out of the box. I was seeing some really strange stuff in Ghost Recon, UT, and 3Dmark2001se. I tried everything I could think of to no avail.

Finally, I called my local Best Buy and explained the problem. They were very helpful and said to just bring the card back and I'd get a new one. I did this and when I opened the box, I found a totally different looking video card inside. On my first card, I had a blue heat sink, a bright green board, and samsumg memory. On the 2nd card, I have a larger silver heat sink, a blue-green board, and a different type of memory. Both are 128MB Geforce4 4200 by BFG. Does anyone know the difference between these cards? Do some overclock better than others? Are there more than two varieties?

By the way, the artifacts are better, but not totally gone. I am going to try to reinstall all my drivers (again) and see how that works. If that yields nothing, I guess I will reformat unless anyone else has an idea.

Sounds like there was a reason BFG was shoveling these things out the door for $89 :|

Anyways, could very well be a heat issue. If you can run the game and then it locks up after a bit, could be a result of heat building up in your case. Also, you can check the 5V line by running either MBM (motherboard monitor, do a google search for it) or checking them in the BIOS, although MBM would be better as it'll show you the power draw after everything is running. MBM will also tell your internal temps and your cpu temps.

Also, is it give you a hard lock or is it giving you a BSOD or error msg? Like nv4disp.dll and some error msg? Also, why are you skipping the Via AGP driver? Is it an AMD NB? I'm asking b/c I don't know what mobo that is. Check your BIOS settings as well for your AGP slot. Try 4x and 64MB AGP Aperture. Turn off fast writes and sideband addressing. If it still locks, try 2x AGP and 32MB aperture.

Problem solved!

In case anyone needs to know: I re-installed my Geforece 3 Ti 200 and then proceeded to completely un-install all drivers.

Then I put in the Geforce4 Ti4200, updated the VIA 4in1, re-installed DirectX 8.1, then installed drivers 40.72. Works like a charm!
